Need help finding LGA 2011 motherbaord for my ESXi build

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

This probably does not belong here but this question is about a motherboard for ESXi and I know we have number of people using Johnm's excellect build. So I was hoping for few recommendations.

I am looking to build a BIG ESXi box for my lab. From personal experience and research, RAM seems to be the limiting factor on how many VMs you can run. Every LGA 1155 motherboard have I come across has a limit of 32GB RAM. Now, I know that LGA 2011 boards can access upto 256GB RAM using RDIMMS. Anyone have any suggestions / recommendation about which board to get?

I found the following 2 boards at NewEgg:

SuperMicro X9SRI-F and SuperMicro X9SRA

Anyone have any favorites? How about a cheap CPU that will allow me to 64-bit VMs?

thanks for the help
