Airvideo from another machine

Featured Replies

I'm currently running one HTPC machine that runs my XBMC, my airvideo and stores all my data on a mix of internal & external drives.  I'm going to build an unraid machine this week and am planning ahead for airvideo.

Initially I was thinking of going with a simple single core chip - SEMPRON 145 SDX145HBGMBOX 2.8GHz Single-Core AM3 45W

However, I started to consider running airvideo on the unraid server which I know would require a better chip.

My question is, would it be possible for me to leave airvideo on the other machine where it lives now and just point it to the files on the unraid server?  Aside from additional network traffic would there be a disadvantage here?  With airvideo on one machine and the files on a separate server where would the conversion take place, on the machine running airvideo I hope, right?

Are there distinct advantages to running airvideo on my unraid box?  if so, what CPU would you reccomend?  I'm looking at this mobo - ASROCK 880GM-LE AM3 HD4250 Micro-ATX

Thoughts on all this?

So, at this point I'm thinking I may just beef up the unraid build to an Athlon II X2 270 w/ 4GB ram.  I know that's overkill for file serving but I hope it might be enough to stream 1080p files from Airvideo on the unraid box should I decide to do that.

I'd still appreciate hearing any comments on running airvideo on an Unraid server vs running airvideo from another machine on the same network while pointing to files on the unraid server.

So I have an HTPC with a core i3 2100T which has air video running on it. Once I had the unraid setup i just pointed to the newly created shares and it works like a charm.

I did however create my Unraid with a core i3 chip in case i decide to run air video directly from the unraid or if i wanted to do any other virtulization or run any software that may require a stronger chip.

Hope that helps.

Nothing wrong with running it on another machine. Point to the smb shares where the media files are and you're good to go.

The only downside (in my mind) is that you would have to leave another machine on whenever you think you need to use airvideo.

The only reason I run all my plugins on unraid is so that I can turn all the other machines off and just leave the unraid server running 24/7
