February 26, 201313 yr http://unixsurplus.com/product/dell-poweredge-xs23-sb-8x-xeon-quad-core-25ghz-32gb-4-in1-cloud-server Quite a tasty selection of Dell Poweredge boxes! Prices seem reasonable although bear in mind the ESXi limitations of a single socket and 32Gig of RAM before getting too excited. Some of these boxes have as many as 4 CPU which would be a bummer to not have support for. 12 bay case? http://unixsurplus.com/product/chenbro-micom-2u-server-12-bays-chassis-sata-sas-rm23212 16bay SAN\NAS? http://unixsurplus.com/product/sgi-3u-media-server-storage-16-hd-bay-sas-sata-ssd-san-array-35-nas-jbod-good Still exploring the site but thought of you guys right away. Don't THINK this is the same site we've been finding stuff on eBay from...
February 26, 201313 yr Looks like that CPU in there doesn't support VT-d. http://ark.intel.com/products/33929/Intel-Xeon-Processor-L5420-12M-Cache-2_50-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB Good deal on this Chenbro SAS expander, they go for $250 new: http://unixsurplus.com/product/chenbro-28-ports-sas-expander-card-w-cables-pn-80h10461201b1-fw-rev-aa11 On another note, I like the logo that's made to look like Sun's old logo. Even the same font.
February 28, 201313 yr Both use LSI chipsets. I would be surprised if they didn't work fine together.
March 3, 201313 yr Will that expander be friendly with a M1015 controller? I use that exact expander (possibly bought from that seller) with an M1015 and it works great.
April 4, 201313 yr Refurbished RocketRAID 2300 PCIe 4x 4-port SATAII cards for $45 bucks. That's about $70 bucks off the price of a new one. http://unixsurplus.com/product/highpoint-rocketraid-2300lf-pci-express-sata-ii-host-adapter
April 4, 201313 yr wow.. this almost makes me want to go 10Gb... $250 for a DUAL 10Gbit NIC? http://unixsurplus.com/product/myricom-dual-port-10-gigabit-ethernet-pci-e-express-x8-network-adapter-10g-pcie2-8b2-2s ALMOST. Er hmm... http://unixsurplus.com/product/intel-neteffect-neo20-cx4-10gb-ethernet-pci-e-cluster-server-adapter If only I could justify the cost of the switch and cabling! lolo

Er hmm... http://unixsurplus.com/product/intel-neteffect-neo20-cx4-10gb-ethernet-pci-e-cluster-server-adapter If only I could justify the cost of the switch and cabling! lolo You can find cheaper CX4 NICs on eBay (especially if you're willing to go for single port). Cost of entry is not as bad as you might think if you only need 4 or less 10Gb ports. Check out the LB4 or TRX100 switches available on the bay. Many of them come with the 4 port CX4 option and can be had for $150-$225 depending on the seller by submitting an offer. I replaced my previous primary switch with one, got three Myricom CX4 cards for $35 each, and then cables for $25 each and wired up my primary servers plus my desktop with 10Gb. More broadly, UnixSurplus have a number of eBay seller IDs they use in addition to their website. They often allow offers on eBay, so if you find something you like on their website, you might look for it from one of their seller IDs and see if you can save a few bucks.
