Memory question on C2SEA Motherboard in MD1510//LL

Featured Replies

The C2SEA motherboard in the MD1510/LL does only support two memory banks as one can see in the picture of the product. The picture in the manual of that same motherboard shows four memory banks.

My question: Is it possible to increase the memory of that 2-bank motherboard to 8GB. If yes, what are the correct chips I need to buy.

Thanks

Harald

The manual you linked to covers 2 variants of that motherboards , and points out that one of the differences is one model only has 2 DIMM slots.  It also states that the maximum memory supported on the 2-slot variant of the board is 4GB (2 x 2GB) so unless you can find something to the contrary then you will not be able to go above this.

Having said that I would not be surprised if that was a BIOS limitation that has since been increased so it might be worthwhile to check the BIOS release notes to see if any update increased that limit.

Ah, thanks for your help.

I have 10GB in my Andromeda build.  It uses a Supermicro board.  The manual says that it only supports 8GB in the 4 slots.  I ran 24 hours of memtest to make sure nothing was funky and everything passed without issue.  If you can find a 4GB stick put it in one of the slots and some more in another slot.

SuperMicro's specs are VERY conservative.    On some of their boards, they specify a max of 4GB not because they won't support 4GB modules (i.e. 8GB total), but to limit the current drawn by RAM modules.

I can't say for sure about the C2SEA board, but I've used two other SuperMicro boards that had 4GB max memory specs -- and both are happily (and reliably) running with 8GB installed  :)

... whether it will work or not in that board, one thing is certain:  it won't hurt to try -- if it doesn't work, it won't damage the board (or the modules).

Harald,

Someone else just asked me this same question about a C2SEA, and I remembered your question.

Did you ever try using 4GB modules?  It'd be nice to be able to provide a "tested" answer  :)

is this mother board is preferred ?

It's an excellent motherboard, but is now pretty dated.  It was used by Limetech in the servers they sold 3-4 years ago; and many of us have used it in our UnRAID systems; but it's not the board I'd use today.
