[Solved] Can only access 3 disks in a share on unraid plus

Featured Replies

I have an HP N40L with 5 standard WD and Seagate 3TB drives. All hardware seems to be operating normally, I can access all drives individually over the LAN from Windows 7 machines and in fact have just updated from ver 5 rc10 to rc11 via Windows Explorer. I bought unRAID Plus in January but am only now getting serious

The problem I am having is that I cannot access more than 3 drives in a share. At present disk1, 3 and 4 are actively shared while disk 2 is unused. I have previously deleted the share and recreated it and created other shares with similar results except that a different drive may be idle. That suggests a problem with my Plus key. I have copied it from the original e-mail again and replaced the one in the flash config folder with no change.

At the moment I have the share set up to use the disk with the most free space. Disks 1, 3 and 4 each have about 750 GB of files while disk 2 is empty. I created empty folders at the top level on disk2 to see if that had any effect but no. I have verified the registration  key on the boot flash drive agrees with that shown below on the e-mail.

I send this to Tom a few days ago as a reply to the original e-mail but so far no comment.

I am low on the learning curve now and would appreciate any help.

Thanks

John

Perhaps you can provide some screen shots to illustrate your problem?

One I would suggest are:

- Main screen showing drives allocated

- Settings->Share Settings

- Shares->one of the shares showing the problems

Thanks for the quick response.

The main snip shows the problem clearly in that drive2 is empty while 3 other data drives have a lot of data. The settings for the share are in the other snip.

I hope this helps

Directory structure? You have split level set to 2, are you sure you are writing to a folder that is allowed to flow to the disk using that split level?

The drives were formatted before creating the movies share. Disk 1 disk3 and disk4 have Movies as the top directory, under that a few sub directories such as HD1080. Under these are further sub directories where unRAID has copied the data files. As you can see on the snip, unRAID is balancing the data fairly evenly over the 3 active disks.

Movies > HD1080 > multiple data directories and files.

Disk2 was blank until I created a Movies and a HD1080 directories directly via Windows Explorer to see what happened. Nothing.  These are still empty.

I think the license must be OK or you could not add the extra drives to the array.

Maybe obvious, but have you actually written new files to the share since adding the disk to it? Share changes are only applied to new writes. unRAID does not move the old data to balance things for you.

The share was new with all disks reformatted. Once I created the share and began adding files only 3 disks were written to. The cfg files on the flash lists all drives as available although I am not sure how they relate to the share. I have done this about 3 times with similar results each time although disk2 is not always the skipped drive.. That is why I query the Plus key.

I can do it all again if it would prove anything.

Yes, I sweated over it and created my current share model as described earlier based on what it says. My share is working as it has distributed almost 3 TB of data pretty evenly over 3 of my 4 data disks all by itself, but does not access the 4th empty disk at all.

Look under Settings -> Share Settings. What drives (if any) are Included/Excluded?

On another note - Did you figure out why you have those Parity errors?

On the current exercise I  have left both fields blank though in a previous attempt I have added disk1 to disk4 in the included field with no difference.

We had a power failure while files were being copied to the share. unRAID rebuilt the parity when power was restored.

Please see attachment. Thanks.

It seems you tried to include disk2 but spelled it didk2. That's the same as excluding disk2 since you have all the other drives included.

Go to Settings/Share Settings and make sure everything is removed and click Apply.

Unraid will default to include all your drives. If you still have problems:

Alternatively you can enter: disk1-4 then click apply.

There's no need to include flash.

That is a left over from earlier play which it seems I did not see when setting up the present share. I even looked at my snip of the cfg file. Just proves that you only see what you want to see some times. (blush). It also seems that I had different problems with the different trials.

Thanks to all for the support.
