AMD Catalyst / Nvidia drivers

Featured Replies

Of course I'm not using both; my machine is an AMD A-8 so I want to be using the catalyst drivers. These packages are available for linux, but they both require "X" to compile and install. I don't need a GUI or X or any of that, I just want to get the drivers running so I can enable 3d acceleration in virtualbox.  Is there any way to get a gutted X package to compile the drivers with? I understand that I could install a full slackware distribution and migrate my current unraid setup to it and then install the drivers easily, but I'm just curious if anybody thinks it's possible without going through all that. I have no idea if these drivers are relevant to anyone else,  considering our headless server environment.

thanks,

Good luck, but i doubt you are going to find any takers on this one.  Most everything could care less about 3d acceleration as we are not attempting to run anything 3d intensive within vbox on unRAID.

Thanks for the response; I figure I'll have to do the slackware install and that's okay. If anybody's curious about what you might need 3d for in vbox; I want to use windows media center tuning my hdhomerun in a w7 VM to be a backend for live tv on my xbox360. W7 can't do mpeg2 without graphics drivers enabled.

Are you sure that card will actually work properly in virtual box VM? I would think it would need the hardware to be passed directly through to the VM.

The HDHomerun is a network tuner, i can install the drivers and the W7 VM detects and tunes every channel perfectly. WMC works with the guide, so i have a channel listing and guide data, but it will return a "video error" when i try to play a channel stream. Likewise, my Xbox sees the VM as an extender host, but fails when i try to activate it. The reason I need to use windows media center instead of mythtv, npvr or tvheadend is that i have cablecard channels on my hdhr prime that are copy protected. Currently wmc is the only livetv backend on any platform with drm support. Vbox even recognizes my a8 graphics chip inside the VM, but since there are no drivers for it in the host system (yes i installed catalyst on the VM, and it recognized the graphics chip), Vbox can't enable 3d acceleration.

Oh, I see.

Unfortunately I think prostuff is right, it's a lost cause without using unraid in a full Slackware install.
