version 5.0 RC11 UI question re visibility of shares and user permissions

Featured Replies

I've just upgraded from v4.7 to v5.0RC11 and have a few questions about the new UI and some general questions about how to control the visibility of shares on my network. I've searched for an updated user guide, but haven't been able to find anything except the wiki document explaining how to migrate from unRAID 4.7 to 5.0.

Is there a new user guide?

If so, could someone provide a link?

Otherwise, here's my question:

When I use Windows Explorer to display the folders in my unRAID server, I see folders for my shares (music, movies, videos and photos) and all of the disks (disk1, disk2... disk7). With version 4.7, I could only see the shares from within Explorer unless I specifically typed "\\tower\disk1" into the address bar.

Is there a way to display only the shares again? It is a lot simpler for the rest of my family if all of the disks aren't displayed.

Is there a way to change it so only the shares are displayed when using Windows Explorer on all computers except mine? On mine I'm happy to have all the disks listed.

In the past, I never bothered with "Users". Will I need to enable Users to have different folders displayed for myself and the other users?

Click on each disk link on the main page to set the disk to be shared hidden.

That worked, thanks!!

After reading about the 'User' shares / permissions feature, I've decided to use it to control read/write permissions and make the data on my server more secure. It looks like you can set read/write permissions per share and disk for each user. What if there is a conflict between the permissions per share and disk?

For example, I have 4 shares - Music, Movies, Videos and Photos. I have read/write permissions for all of these shares. My wife has read/write permissions for Photos and read-only permissions for everything else. My kids have read-only permission for all 4 shares.

When you click on the disk from the main page to modify the settings, after I set 'Export' to "Yes (hidden)" and security to "Secure", you also have the option of setting user access to read/write or read-only. I set it up so I have read/write access to every disk and the rest of my family has read-only access to every disk. However, the Photos share is defined as including disk4 and excluding disk1,disk2,disk3. This means when disk 4 is full, photos can be stored in disk5, disk6 or disk7. Since we have far less than 2 TB of photos there is no need to reserve that whole disk for just photos. So, Music, Movies and Videos are not excluded from disk4. So right now disk4 has a folder for Photos and also has folders for Movies and Videos. I want my wife to have read/write access to the Photos folder, but not the movies and videos folders.

If I set her permission for disk4 to read-only, will that override her read/write permission to Photos?

If so, how do I give her read/write permission to Photos, but not read/write persmission to all of disk4?

It is all about how it is referenced by the user or their application. If she or her application asks for \\tower\disk4, disk4 permissions are used. If she or her application asks for \\tower\Photos, Photos permissions are used.

Since you are just getting started with user shares, here is a wiki article and a recent post from Limetech that might also be educational.

Not to hi-jack, but I have a similar issue...after upgrading to 5.0-rc11. Most of my devices, still see my user shares; Squeezebox, WDTV Live, etc. My Dune player does not. Even if I just browse the SMB...it sees my server, but the shares as "empty".

I keep reading about shares and permissions issues, after upgrading; but figured I got (mostly) lucky. Only thing I could think of, is I know you lose your users during the upgrade. I seem to remember something...wayyy back when...about maybe needing a default user, so Dune could see the shares. I tried creating one; still no luck.

What do you think: is this a Dune issue, or 5.0 issue? Thanks
