March 20, 201313 yr I just noticed that my unraid was running really slow and when i logged in I noticed that there is a red dot next to one of my terabyte drives (disk 9) and the array says its started but with an orange dot. So where do I begin troubleshooting. Is there any chance that the drive is ok but just has errors or something or do i need to go buy a new drive and drop it in? i could paste the entire syslog to pastebin because it was over the size limit but here is an excerpt: http://pastebin.com/h5qGYAJQ
March 20, 201313 yr You are currently simulation the contents of disk9, the excerpt of the syslog is useless to determine the actual error, it just shows the read failures. Zip it (they zip really well) and attach it. It could be a failed drive, or, it could be a cable issue. (loose, or defective) See the wiki for how to proceed. http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/FAQ#What_does_the_Red_Ball_mean.3F
March 20, 201313 yr Author thanks for the tip - i zipped the syslog and attached it here. I appreciate your assistance! syslog-2013-03-20.txt.zip
March 20, 201313 yr Author So this is interesting... I stopped the array and then hit the shut down button in the gui to shut down the server. Now the server is still on but the web gui is inaccessible and the activity light on one of the drives is on. Its been about 20 minutes so far like this and the server has not actually shut down yet. What do i do now?
March 21, 201313 yr Author ok i bit the bullet and shit it down and now it wont boot back up. when i power it on, i dont even get the bios screen or anything on the monitor. no beep codes or anything. the fans spin and the drive bay lights come on and thats it. oh no!!
March 21, 201313 yr Author more information about my hardware... case: Cooler Master Stacker - http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16811119042 mother board: ASUS P5PE-VM LGA 775 Intel 865G Micro ATX - http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16813131029 CPU: Intel Pentium 4 531 Prescott 3.0GHz LGA 775 Single-Core Processor BX80547PG3000EK - http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16819116230 Memory: Kingston ValueRAM 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model KVR400AK2/1GR - http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16820141437 This hardware has been running since 2006 without fail and I havent changed anything. Now suddenly when I boot up, i get no display, the fans spin up and the drive lights come on but nothing else happens. no beep codes indicating errors... not sure what do do here.
March 21, 201313 yr Sounds to me like you need to start eliminating hardware possibilities, especially considering your hardware is 7 years old.... eg.: - detach all hard disks and try and get the motherboard to POST (without the unRAID USB stick in there if you want to be safe.) - if that doesn't work, then you need to look at replacing hardware. If you aren't getting POST error beeps, it could well be the motherboard itself, or the PSU. To be perfectly honest, if it's in the budget, I'd be looking at an upgrade, even a minor one, if possible.. that hardware is starting to get very long in the tooth Will leave the syslog analysis to someone with more experience than me, but regardless of that, you do need to get the box to at least POST.
March 21, 201313 yr Author Three questions: 1) i am concerned about the data. If i were not able to get this system to post, could i drop my drives into a new unraid system with all new hardware and bring the array back up? 2) can someone recommend some more updated hardware that will not break the bank? Right now my system uses two power supplies. If nothing else i would love to have new hardware which only uses one power supply. 3) i dont think i have the money but i really like the pre built lime tech systems. But it says they are all out of stock. Is there anywhere else that makes similar prebuilt unraid systems?
March 21, 201313 yr Author ok so i came across this article on the wiki about replacing your motherboard. the problem is that it says you have to have a scrrenshot of your devices page from before the server was shut down so that you can reassign the physical disks to the the logical disks. The problem is that I do not have this screenshot and since I cant boot back up I have no way to get it. so if i get new hardware, is there any way to ensure that I get the drives set back up properly and do not lose my data?
March 21, 201313 yr Author My server was running 4.7. I was waiting for v5 to come out of beta before i installed it.

March 21, 201313 yr If you start over you should just be able to set a new config with your existing data drives and rebuild parity. The syslog excerpt you posted has the drive serial information you need. If you don't want to build your own, see Greenleaf
March 21, 201313 yr Author thanks for the info everyone. I think I would like to get some new parts and upgrade my existing server. I think I am going to try to keep my CM Stacker case, drives and bays but aside from that can someone suggest some new parts to use (Motherboard, CPU, RAM, PSU)?
March 21, 201313 yr My server was running 4.7. I was waiting for v5 to come out of beta before i installed it. If worse comes to the worse, unraid does use unique file systems on each drive, so, you could just mount it on literally any PC that supports ReiserFS and gather all your data back, assuming none of them are corrupt.
