SF will affect the parity check speed while the GUI is open on the main page. This is due to polling the disks for temp, something that Tom has since advised we should not do, so this will be changed in the next release.

 

FYI we only have issues with the temp plugin installed.

 

Regarding this latest RC, unfortunately I'm having the same issue with Realtek NICs.

Maybe just don't poll as often.  The SMART command is very disruptive to the I/O stream because it flushes everything in process, waits for the flush to finish, then typically the drive heads seek to one end of the drive (because the SMART command is, well, not so smart), updates the SMART data including the temperature.  Finally, I/O is permitted to resume.  Also the drives will not necessarily receive the SMART command at the same time due to some serialization in the non-read/write I/O flow, and parity will not resume until ALL the drives have processed the SMART command sent to them.

I dont understand why you people are so upset about me posting about plugins.

The fact that a plugin can negatively influence unraid's functioning is a big deal and should be mentioned in this thread.

 

Maybe there is a way to create some sort of 'protected' plugin structure so a plugin lives in its own space/vm and can never alter the workings of unraid. If something like that is even possible under linux or unraid, i dont know.

Like right now I am Mad that Tom missed a manual step in his release workflow (Not the first time mind you), and even thought it didn't affect me personally  ;D

But it's understandable when someone works on a product off and on, you forget things.. nothing to worry about.

 

I think Tom was simply trying not to put people off posting issues regarding releases, don't take anything personally. From what I've seen, Tom has been working very hard over the last few months to get everything sorted.

 

Either way, problem identified and will be resolved.

 

Now, let's get this post back on track  :D

@Speeding_Ant, agree with some point not with others  ;)

 

I don't believe anyone wants to put anyone off, just test results that matter to the core product is what will hopefully get us 5.0 final. The flip flop of whats considered acceptable testing was changed today. No issue on my part, Tom changed his mind, then follows up that I am supposedly mad about not wanting to hear about plugin problems on an announcement thread.

 

From a personal perspective, Tom doesn't answer to bug reports (acknowledge or deny if whats reported is a bug), leaving things in the dark conveniently. So I'm pretty certain even Final will have bugs that were reported not rectified and features that were left hanging.

 

My comments are nothing for him to be upset about, that's the path he chooses. My personal feels are even though its come a long way in 2 years, so much more could have been ironed out in between the waits for Linux kernel's, but that's just me.

well I'll wait this one out, given my SuperMicro C2SEE has the onboard Realtek RTL8111C nic.  From what has been posted, nobody has RC12 working with this nic. :(

Right, sorry this was a SNAFU on my part... There's a manual step in my release workflow that I sometimes forget and it results in the realtek drivers not getting included in the 'bzimage' file.  I'll be posting a -rc12a momentarily...

Ok, 5.0-rc12a with Realtek NIC drivers is up (modified the first post of this thread to point to correct download).

 

wow, that was fast!  I rebuilt my flash drive when I upgraded to rc11, so I assume that I can just copy the two main files over, right?  Or did the other files change as well?

The second entry limits unRAID to using 4GB of RAM even if you have more installed.  This was added as it seems to help many of those who have been experiencing slow parity syncs.

 

I expect it will be removed if a way is found for the issue to be resolved for such users without applying this limit.

I don't even know what simplefeatures is.  I for one do wish you guys would take it to another thread.  I'm glad Tom is tolerant, but you guys posting in this thread seems like just looking for attention when you could be posting perfectly on topic on a different thread.  I understand, some people need attention, but simplefeatures is completely irrelevant to users like me.  I would get upset if it got in the way of development  of unraid, that's for sure. 

 

I believe it would be better if you worked with the developer of simplefeatures whom you paid to work these things out - yes?

Tom, I updated my server to -12a and rebooted.  It is working fine now.  I have r8168.

rc11 working fine, but with rc12 cannot access server - presumably also due to my NIC Realtek 8111E    :(

 

Upgraded to rc12a  and now all is working again - thank you    :)

Upgrade to RC12a,

 

Differences in RC11a versus RC12a in the syslog: (seems the network loads later a bit but I have heard others state you cant go by time as many things log at the same time, not sure if that holds in this case but I am mentioning what I saw)

Once the array was started I was just about to test mover manually and noticed nothing had moved by mover last night (that was on RC11a), so manually via WebGui I launched mover. Nothing moved under RC12a either.

 

This was a large move than normally 39GB. Once mover crashed, 'user0' is gone, nothing I can do but reboot to get it back...

So this is not a RC12a specific issue as it failed to move via RC11a last night as well.

Reboot after mover crash.

 

I have asked this before, no answer from Tom, The question was why are there so many reads and several writes to each and every disk in the array when you first start the array including the parity drive, when no clients are attached. THis reading and writing last for about 10-15 mins. Any and every reboot of unRAID.

 

Upon this reboot, and starting the array I did not wait 10-15 minutes for these reads and writes to subside, and launched mover manually.

 

This time not only did mover crashe but a Kernel oops, cant get a syslog, unRAID is frozen, grabbed what was being spit out via a console session:

I should mention all those other shares had data in them to move "movies" "tv shows" "kids tv shows", but log logs clearly they where all skipped.

So since waiting for Tom to answer anything I post is pointless.

 

What I decided to do is DISABLE AFP, and reboot. What I observed was now I no longer get all those Reads and Writes to all the array drives and parity drive upon the array starting up and lasting 10-15 minutes (safe to say AFP is doing some sort of crap on each and every disk).

 

Executed mover manually, mover crashed but this time no kernel oops.

 

So as much as Tom may believe RC12a is close to final, its a mess in my book. AFP is a disaster, mover/rsync whatever the underlining code/module, and memory management all blow. Hoping I am the only one who has these issues for everyone else's sake.

the AFP write thing you are likely seeing is AFP updating its database or files that are on those disks.  There is likely NOTHING that can be done to stop that if you have AFP enabled.  It is part of AFP.

 

As for the kernel oops, run a memtest on the system and see what happens.
