AFP places the .AppleDesktop\.volinfo and .AppleDouble\.parent per AFP share only on one disk and doesnt change often and not a single one changed today. The db for the apple shares I don't even store on the array or cache drive, I have it on a separate disk off unRAID array/cache drive. Storing in on the array cause a full rebuilt every reboot otherwise, and is unacceptable. So I agree AFP is reading ALOT of something and writes little something (ACL, extended attribute, don't know) per the web gui stats, but nothing clear as to what.

 

Memtest'ed my build 2 years ago for a week straight (ECC fully buffered) passed with flying colors.

850w gold PSU over kill for what I have.

The nfs stale file handle issue is a bugger because of how FUSE works.  The solution here is going to involve either a large amount of RAM or use of a swap device/file.

 

I don't quite understand why you were able to effect a significant improvement in the nfs stale file handle issue a couple of RCs back, but it suddenly became worse again between rc10 and rc11.  Did FUSE change between those two releases?

 

Looking back through the release notes, I can see that you made a change to shfs in rc4 to address the nfs stale file handle problem.  While this didn't completely fix every instance of the problem, it did make things a great deal better.

 

I still wonder, then, why the problem returned with avengeance in rc11.  The release notes record two shfs changes in rc11 - did these, somehow, negate the change you made in rc4?

Same here. rc11 is fine but rc12 does not recognise NIC.

Update: I am pretty certain in 4.7 this was the r8169 driver not r8168

 

Yay!  Just saw your link for rc12a.  Copied bzimage, and bzroot to my rc10 configuration and now it works.  NIC card recognized.  Thank you.

Stop AFP, then go through each of your shares and rebuild the CNID stores.

Weird, I'm not seeing this behavior.

Just to confirm 12a fixed my NIC issue as expected

Reboot after mover crash.

 

I have asked this before, no answer from Tom, The question was why are there so many reads and several writes to each and every disk in the array when you first start the array including the parity drive, when no clients are attached. THis reading and writing last for about 10-15 mins. Any and every reboot of unRAID.

 

Upon this reboot, and starting the array I did not wait 10-15 minutes for these reads and writes to subside, and launched mover manually.

 

This time not only did mover crashe but a Kernel oops, cant get a syslog, unRAID is frozen, grabbed what was being spit out via a console session:

I should mention all those other shares had data in them to move "movies" "tv shows" "kids tv shows", but log logs clearly they where all skipped.

 

I am seeing this, though not with the mover.

I'm pretty sure I've seen the same behaviour in previous RC's - not related to mover crashing though. Is this not expected behaviour for unRAID?

 

I'm not home at the moment, but can test and confirm when I return if it would help.

The new list of FTP users requires a space as a seperator whereas the list of excluded/included disks requires a comma as a seperator. Is it really a different seperator or can I use both (comma/space) in both fiels?

 

webGui: for 'FTP user(s)', permit multiple usernames separated by spaces

 

For example, to restrict a share to using only disk1, disk2, and disk3, you would set Included disk(s) to disk1,disk2,disk3.

cache_dirs may explain reads if it's being used, but wouldn't be any reason for it to write to the disks, would it?

Upgraded from RC11 to RC12a (unRAID in ESXi 5.1).  Everything seems to be in order so far.  Running parity check @ 118MB/s.

I skipped rc12 since dirtysanchez reported network problem with our mobo.

 

I can report that rc12a is working fine for me.

 

Ok, found something i think is very interesting.

 

After i tried rc12 with sf 1.0.5 allready on the system i saw the parity check speeds were horrible (40-50MB/s) compared to rc5/sf 1.0.5 (160MB/s)

So i re-installed rc5 and guess what... the SAME horrible speeds! This baffled me.

So i removed SimpleFeatures, and rebooted... (rc5) and speed was back (160MB/s).

I re-installed SF 1.0.5 using installplg and... the speed stayed up high.

 

So, i guess we need an addition to the up- or downgrade procedure, that states that SimpleFeatures should be REMOVED and RE-INSTALLED after an up - or downgrade.

Keeping SF on the system f*cks things up after upgrading. You HAVE to re-install it. Will place this warning at the Sf topic as well.

 

So i tested a bit more. I removed Simplefeatures again, and replaced rc5 with rc12 and rebooted.

Now i have NO simplefeatures, just unmenu and some plugins (sab/sick/dropbox/slimserver).

Parity speeds are now at about 150MB/s... that is still a little bit less then under rc5 (160MB/s) but acceptable.

This speed can be seen at the stock webgui and in unmenu.

 

Guess what. I've installed SimpleFeatures again (1.0.5) and the parity speed goes down to about 90 - 100MB/s... if you actually watch it IN simplefeatures gui.

Once you close the simplefeatures webpage, and go back to unmenu, you will see the parity speed increase to 150MB/s again...

Using the latest SimpleFeatures (1.0.11) is even worse, it basically stops the parity check with speeds from 20-30MB/s, which is unworkable.

 

Basically this means that SimpleFeatures has a huge negative effect on the performance of unraid and should be avoided.

It would be very interesting to find out why this is, and if it can be solved.

 

I know SF is not part of Limetech, but i think a lot of people use SF together with unraid and even regard it as one and the same.

At least Limetech should take a look at this and warn people about the possible sideeffects of SF, and it should be made clear that IF you are using SF, you should re-install it after an up- or downgrade.

 

So, my apologies to Limetech, rc12 is not as bad as i thought, the real problem is SimpleFeatures...

 

Tested this awhile ago after it was reported. Just tested again. SF causes no slow downs for me, but I get slow speeds regardless.

 

Completely stock rc12a, still ~55MB/s parity syncs when I get 120MB/s on beta12a.

Installed rc12a and everything is now working as expected.  Thanks Tom!

AFP places the .AppleDesktop\.volinfo and .AppleDouble\.parent per AFP share only on one disk and doesnt change often and not a single one changed today. The db for the apple shares I don't even store on the array or cache drive, I have it on a separate disk off unRAID array/cache drive. Storing in on the array cause a full rebuilt every reboot otherwise, and is unacceptable. So I agree AFP is reading ALOT of something and writes little something (ACL, extended attribute, don't know) per the web gui stats, but nothing clear as to what.

 

Memtest'ed my build 2 years ago for a week straight (ECC fully buffered) passed with flying colors.

850w gold PSU over kill for what I have.

Weird, I'm not seeing this behavior.

Do you mean, with AFP enabled when you first start the array, your not seeing the numerous reads and several writes to each disk that is apart of an AFP share? (as well as the parity drive).

Upon this reboot, and starting the array I did not wait 10-15 minutes for these reads and writes to subside, and launched mover manually.

 

This time not only did mover crashe but a Kernel oops, cant get a syslog, unRAID is frozen, grabbed what was being spit out via a console session:

I should mention all those other shares had data in them to move "movies" "tv shows" "kids tv shows", but log logs clearly they where all skipped.

THis reading and writing last for about 10-15 mins. Any and every reboot of unRAID.

 

I'm pretty sure I've seen the same behaviour in previous RC's - not related to mover crashing though. Is this not expected behaviour for unRAID?

 

I'm not home at the moment, but can test and confirm when I return if it would help.

Are you referring to the reads and writes upon array start up? If so I investigated and noticed that if SMB is enabled and AFP is disabled this does not occur. If SMB is enabled AND AFP is enabled it does occur.

Are you using cache_dirs?

No cache_dirs, no SF, no unMenu, no Plex, etc... nothing except VMTools (by Zeron), as Tom never fixed the kernel oops errors I had with my SM motherboard and xeon proc (abandoned ), so virtual is the only way unRAID run for me. 2 LSI (OEM LSI) controller's in pass-through to all the disks. It makes no difference to me whether unRAID runs on metal or virtual, but I don't have the choice to run in on metal. This was explained to Tom back in 8-2011, that the only way I could get it running was virtual. Promises made to purchase a SM X8SIL-F MB and Xeon proc (back in 7-19-2011 by him) to resolve but nothing ever happened. I will not run with plugins until 5.0 (hopefully final) is working as it should. Then I can look at what interests me to possible add-on.

Ok, found something i think is very interesting.

 

After i tried rc12 with sf 1.0.5 allready on the system i saw the parity check speeds were horrible (40-50MB/s) compared to rc5/sf 1.0.5 (160MB/s)

So i re-installed rc5 and guess what... the SAME horrible speeds! This baffled me.

So i removed SimpleFeatures, and rebooted... (rc5) and speed was back (160MB/s).

I re-installed SF 1.0.5 using installplg and... the speed stayed up high.

 

So, i guess we need an addition to the up- or downgrade procedure, that states that SimpleFeatures should be REMOVED and RE-INSTALLED after an up - or downgrade.

Keeping SF on the system f*cks things up after upgrading. You HAVE to re-install it. Will place this warning at the Sf topic as well.

 

So i tested a bit more. I removed Simplefeatures again, and replaced rc5 with rc12 and rebooted.

Now i have NO simplefeatures, just unmenu and some plugins (sab/sick/dropbox/slimserver).

Parity speeds are now at about 150MB/s... that is still a little bit less then under rc5 (160MB/s) but acceptable.

This speed can be seen at the stock webgui and in unmenu.

 

Guess what. I've installed SimpleFeatures again (1.0.5) and the parity speed goes down to about 90 - 100MB/s... if you actually watch it IN simplefeatures gui.

Once you close the simplefeatures webpage, and go back to unmenu, you will see the parity speed increase to 150MB/s again...

Using the latest SimpleFeatures (1.0.11) is even worse, it basically stops the parity check with speeds from 20-30MB/s, which is unworkable.

 

Basically this means that SimpleFeatures has a huge negative effect on the performance of unraid and should be avoided.

It would be very interesting to find out why this is, and if it can be solved.

 

I know SF is not part of Limetech, but i think a lot of people use SF together with unraid and even regard it as one and the same.

At least Limetech should take a look at this and warn people about the possible sideeffects of SF, and it should be made clear that IF you are using SF, you should re-install it after an up- or downgrade.

 

So, my apologies to Limetech, rc12 is not as bad as i thought, the real problem is SimpleFeatures...

Thanks for doing that testing. I'm of two minds, but will need to do some serious investigation. No way should a PHP function cause cpu stalls.

 

Either  way, thankfully you've proved that the speed is the same unless you view the web gui. Unless you are refreshing the GUI for 8 hours straight you won't see a huge difference.

Hi Joe,

 

Already aware of that, the temp plugin was polling smartctl in the background. Bonienl has made a few changes which I haven't reviewed properly in the last version, so I will need to go back through and find if there are any changes that may be causing this behaviour.
