October 16, 200817 yr I am trying to see if there is any way to add a serial port on an Abit AB9 Pro. I was given a APC smartUPS 700 but it only has a serial connection and my MOBO does not have one. I want to use APCUPSD to control it Thanks,
October 16, 200817 yr Author DUH!!!! Don't know why I did not think of either of these...sometimes the obvious slips right by me Thanks,
October 16, 200817 yr Happens to all of us In fact I just happen to buy a ubs-serial adapter recently cuz I wanted to hack my Thecus... Then after your question, it made me realize I can't put my new used UPS online until I put the usb to serial adapter on the unRAID system (right now I have it all networked through my administrative server).
October 16, 200817 yr Author Thanks. I am assuming that it will still detect the UPS thru the adapter, right?
October 16, 200817 yr I cannot say for sure on the unRAID platform. I've read that the usb-to-serial adapters show up as a /dev/ttyxx serial port (Which is all you should need). But I've yet to see this occur, and even to see it occur on unRAID. I'll try and test it out over the next few days. If that does not work for you, another choice is to get a used SNMP management card, and put an SNMP facility on your unRAID machine. I know people that have done this on regular machines. Not sure how complicated this is on unRAID.
October 16, 200817 yr MY first test proves that 1. it was detected by the system as a USB device. 2. It does not come up as a serial port. From what I can gather USB Serial port is not enabled in the kernel # # USB Serial Converter support # # CONFIG_USB_SERIAL is not set if I have a chance I'll recompile and see if mine works.
October 17, 200817 yr Have you gotten anywhere yet WeeboTech....just curious No I recompiled the kernel, but I've been waiting for a few torrents to finish before installing and rebooting. Should be within a day or so.
December 30, 200817 yr Author Has anyone found out yet if something like this: http://www.buy.com/prod/keyspan-high-speed-usb-serial-adapter-keyspan-high-speed-usb-serial/q/loc/101/10357749.html?adid=17653&dcaid=17653 would work with unraid and a UPS? Thanks,
December 31, 200817 yr you have to make sure the unit purchased has native linux drivers. Some have proprietary drivers that may not compile with current kernel levels. There are few on newegg.com that have native linux support. Check out the chipsets and reviews there.
