November 7, 201312 yr What do you do with your internet, do you use anything aggressive, like torrents/newsgroups/etc or is it just your run of the mill usage with lots of media rips stored on UNRAID instead? Indeed I will reactivate my usenet account and use something like SABnzbd. So, yes, I would say that there will be aggressive downloading 24/7. Apart from that it's normal internet usage, maybe streaming something every once in a while, and serving media rips to the devices, of course. That in mind, is the router they're offering me not good enough? My issue with my ISP provided router was the amount of connections. Running torrents 24/7, i would have LOTS of little connections to my router, often many connections from multiple IPs. You will be using newsgroups (which i'm only familiar with from reading about them), but I don't think that needs a lot of cpu overhead to handle thousands of little connections to YOUR router. Most of the connections will be out to the usenet provider, and you'll probably just be maxing out your download speed. I'd say go for it, and if it proves to be problematic BECAUSE you are overtaxing it (the router), then look into an upgrade. If you need more GB ports locally (GB ports to the internet do nothing when your internet is no where near that fast) then get a 5/8 port GB switch (US$30 at the most?) I agree with Fireball3, it looks fine for everything you listed. Unless you have some advanced things you want to do, like VPN tunneling, providing a guest wifi network, providing DHCP reservations to your unraid box/HTPC machines, I think you'll be fine.
November 7, 201312 yr More specific: How many phones of what kind do you plan to connect/use with the FB. But since you asked for a router - there are routers that don't offer these kind of gimmicks at all! So probably not necessary? Every router should be able to handle the downloads. That's what they're designed for. AVM gear is usually very solid.
November 7, 201312 yr Author More specific: How many phones of what kind do you plan to connect/use with the FB. None, actually. I'm using my cellphone. Thanks for your detailled response!
November 10, 201312 yr The ISP's usually offer you a nice bundle consisting of contract + hardware. The ISP I'm considering to use is offering me a re-branded FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7330SL/7360 (WLAN router with 2x LAN, DECT base station for 6 DECT + 1 fixed line phone, 2x USB) for 49€. Would that be enough? Or do I need the 7390? 7360: http://www.avm.de/en/Produkte/FRITZBox/FRITZ_Box_7360/index.php 7390: http://www.avm.de/en/Produkte/FRITZBox/FRITZ_Box_Fon_WLAN_7390/index.php what ever ISP you decide to go with just ask them for the modem only and buy the router yourself. 1. The Router is yours to keep and can be used with any ISP DSL/Cable etc.. 2. Gigibit ports. Most ISP give old modem/routers so might not get GB ports or not enough. 3. Future Proofing. Buying a New Router will get you all the new technology wifi N900/ Ac. VPN 4. Real Specs.. Know the CPU of the Router.. http://www.wehavemorefun.de/fritzbox/IKF6850 while both units have good hardware. The CPU will share the work load of the modem and Router because its one unit. 5. Firmware Hacks.. DDWRT or Tomato or OpenWRT.. Lets you make your Purchased Router even better.. So My Recommendation would be Asus RT-AC66U Asus RT-N66U (Best bang for $Buck) http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/wireless-routers/1295800/asus-rt-n66u-dual-band-wireless-n900-gigabit-router Asus RT-N16 All home Routers are good for the average user. 1-5 connections.. No Torrents.. and gaming at the same time.. .. etc etc.. Is there a reason that you have to get a unit that has the router built in?
