March 26, 201313 yr I'm going to load PFSense on my ESXi box to act as a firewall and router. I need a new gigabit switch with 16 ports. However my issue is what should I go with as far as unmanaged, managed, smart. I understand the difference between them but what are you guys running at home? It almost seems like a managed switch is overkill but I am worried there is something I am not seeing. VLAN's in a corporate or small business environment make sense but at home do they? I guess my ultimate question is what are you using a managed (or smart) switch for at home?
March 26, 201313 yr IMHO, a smart (managed) is all you will ever need at home, if ever. Here are some examples, you'll be needing one for: VLANs (I know of some IPTV streaming solutions for your digital smart home, that require VLAN separation) or Link Aggregation (running a multi homed server, combining all NICs into a virtual one)

Otherwise save a ton of money and get unmanaged. Sent from my SGH-I727R using Tapatalk 2
