October 19, 200817 yr When I watch a video file using WMP for a about 10-20 secconds after I open the file WMP is unresponsive. If I view task manager it shows that WMP is not respond. Then everything becomes fine, this is after the drive has spun up. I hear the music and see the video but I am unable to pause or move through the video. This happens in Vista and XP. This problem recently started happening, and does not happen when using VLC. I have not changed anything since I have setup unraid 2 or 3 months ago. I also tried it from an XP machine and a Vista machine with the same results. The same thing happens if I pause then unpause the file. Any ideas as to what this might be? Thanks.
October 19, 200817 yr Author What format? The files types that I have tried are AVI, MKV, x264, h264. Also sometimes when I add files to the WMP play list, switching to the next file does not cause lag. Yet other times it does (for the same file).

October 19, 200817 yr Author http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928898 Seems like what you are experiencing. Basically it says, "bummer, deal with it." Bill I'm curious because it happens with XP as well, and this started happening a few weeks ago on my Vista machine. I wonder if it can be a network problem. Also the some of the files are as small as 150mb After some further testing it seems to be WMP 11 and network files. All other media players play fine, as well as WMP 11 playing fine if the file is stored locally. But if it's a networked file WMP 11 becomes unresponsive (wired or wireless connection). What I'm confused about is why it was working before. I did recently updated the firmware of my router but I doubt that has anything to do with it. I'm glad my data is ok. If anybody has any idea's I'd be interested in hearing them.
October 20, 200817 yr It could be tracking codec usage. I know on some of my older machines, I did not update to WMP11. I see a message about checking the codec even if I've already viewed the file. I also know with certain files, the whole file us scanned to get information about the file. This may be faster if the file is local vs on a network share.
