SMART Shows Passed but with Read Errors

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Running 4.7. Syslog is attached.

When running short smart on my parity drive I see the following message.

# 1  Short offline      Completed: read failure      90%    20310        414592338

I also see some UNC errors on ATA3 (I'm not sure if that's the same drive).

And this error

md: disk0 read error

kernel: handle_stripe read error: 424932664/0, count: 1

kernel: md: disk0 read error

Are some of my drives failing?

Thanks In Advance!

Post a SMART report for the parity disk.

Here is the SMART report. It never gets under 90% left but shows complete. Is it time to RMA the drive?

I had a WD 2TB drive that behaved like yours, when I contacted WD about it they said to RMA it.  Took about 2 weeks to get the replacement.

I should have stuck with Seagate :/

Either way, should I do a parity check before shutting everything down? Or would that potentially cause more problems?

Also how would I know which drive is ATA3? I only see letters liks sda and sba when looking at the drives from unmenu.

The parity drive is bad so a parity check will not be useful. You could try to pre-clear the drive and then post a new SMART report.

I'd thought it would be safer to RMA the drive. It's nice that WD also has the advance replacement so it shouldn't take to long to get a new drive! I'll update this thread once I have everything up and running.
