[solved]two new drives suddenly no longer known to system

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I am a bit stressed. Today I tried to make some changes to the unraid flash drive to install plugins, however I was not able to do it remotely. So I had to shutdown the server, however that also did not work properly. So I issued direct on the controle shutdown -h now and it shutdown. However after I made the changes to the flash drive and powered back the Unraid server with rc11 it suddenly did not know about the 2 new drives I added a week ago. I have stopped the array and added them but it is saying they are new, however they already contain lots of existing data which I definately don't want to lose now. Any suggestions how I can resolve this now?

Your data is almost certainly recoverable as long as you are careful.

When you say that the drives are 'new' do you mean that they are not shown as assigned in the drive list, or that they show up there as 'unformatted'.  The next step will vary according to your answer.

Also, what version of unRAID are you running?

I think it might be possible that my usb key is becoming corrupt and therefore it was not able to save the new configuration.

I think it might be possible that my usb key is becoming corrupt and therefore it was not able to save the new configuration.

That is one (relatively common) possibility.  It can normally be rectified by plugging the USB drive into a PC or Mac and running chkdsk to check it out and fix any issues found.

I did run the chkdsk and it fixed some issues.

I did run the chkdsk and it fixed some issues.

Does that mean that the issue is now solved for you?

If you are still having problems getting the drives with your data on recognized correctly by the system then perhaps you should state where you are now?

I had run the scan before I powered on the server, so the problem actually was displayed after it had already completed the chkdsk. I think I should replace my usb key maybe. However will I need to then just use the new configuration and set the drives in the same order as before and start building parity? And yes the system is still not running.

Sounds like the right way to go.

As long as you make sure you never chose the option to format a drive if it comes up as 'unformatted' then you should be able to recover any data that is already on the drive.

ok I now gotten a new pro key from Tom and done the initial configuration, it's now doing the parity sync, I will report back how that completes. It seems that it has to correct a lot of the parity because it finds lots of errors and it's running slow now. I already disabled all plugins... so I don't know what else I can do with 5 rc12a.

I've now completed two resync and the second one did not have any errors so it seems that the flash was my issue, thanks again for assistance
