April 14, 201313 yr Hi everyone, I have a coolermaster 810 stacker, and just started swapping the bays that came with the case with 5 in 3 sold by xcase, which I believe are rebadged Norco ss500. All good, led work and install is a doodle, apart from one small problem: they won't go all in, currently sticking out about 3 cm from the case. What am I doing wrong? Do I really have to start hammering the case? Not a good thing to do when you have 13 drives in the case. PS: OOT I am using a Seasonic S12-430 power supply. Going to add the 14th disc next week (4TB new parity). Is it time to upgrade the PSU?
April 14, 201313 yr Can you see what's blocking it inside? On some cases there are tabs you have to either bend down or break off to get the cage to slide in all the way. HTH Kevin
April 14, 201313 yr Author Not sure. The case is full right now, have just ordered another two 5 in three caddies, so I can remove all of the drives and take a good look at it. I suspect I'll have to buy some diy tool that I can use to push those bumps is without hammering the case. Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
April 14, 201313 yr Author Maybe a screw clamp to push them in? Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
April 14, 201313 yr I can't see the bumps in the pictures you provided, so I guess I can't offer any suggestions on how to get rid of them that would be particularly helpful. I know that Greenleaf Technologies recommends installing the cages rotated 180 degrees from what you show. Have you tried that? Kevin
April 15, 201313 yr Author http://www.coolermaster.co.uk/upload/download/69/files/manual.pdf I found the manual for the case, but it doesn't really tell you much more. Will do some more analysis tonight hopefully when I get home.
April 15, 201313 yr Author ... I know that Greenleaf Technologies recommends installing the cages rotated 180 degrees from what you show. Have you tried that? Kevin Mmmh, I found this review of the caddies (v2 are the ones I own) http://greenleaf-technology.com/new-norco-ss-500-5-in-3-drive-cage-review/ Why would 180 degrees rotation help?
April 15, 201313 yr I didn't see the 180 degree rotation you were talking about in the article, but by the looks of the cage that would put the sata and power connectors on the bottom and make installation a bit easier, also the cables would not block the air flow from the bays in anyway. Just my thoughts.
April 15, 201313 yr Author I didn't see the 180 degree rotation you were talking about in the article, but by the looks of the cage that would put the sata and power connectors on the bottom and make installation a bit easier, also the cables would not block the air flow from the bays in anyway. Just my thoughts. Yup, that is exactly how I installed them. If you want them to look like they do on the article (rotate the box, as I installed it, by 180 degrees), then sata and power connections are in the top section of the unit, at the back. Not incredibly practical. In the picture on the Norco website, the cage is either on its side, or like I installed it http://www.norcotek.com/SS-500.php
April 15, 201313 yr Author Mystery solved. The vertical metal grooves at the back of picture one and two were stopping the caddy from going all in. Once I pressed them in, the caddy went in all the way. Job done. I should receive the other two caddies tomorrow, will complete the transfer on the weekend. Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
April 15, 201313 yr The orientation of the caddy can affect the number of mounting screws you can install depending on the hole pattern you have in your case. Own my cage I needed to rotate them 180 degrees as recommended by Greenleaf.
April 15, 201313 yr Author Ah, I see. The coolermaster has plastic clips on the sides so I don't use any screws. That server has not moved since I bought it...15 drives make it quite hard to move now even if I wanted to... Thanks for the reply Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
April 17, 201313 yr Author I actually installed two more caddies yesterday night. Swapping 14 drives took some time, I also labelled all the sata cables... Amazingly it all worked out straight away! Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
April 17, 201313 yr Author A few pics... the alignment of the screw holes forced me too keep the caddies as they are in terms of orientation. One thing I noticed is that the disks are getting a little hotter. Temps of the old 500 gigs Seagate are just around 40c for those sandwiched in between. Temps of the ones on the outer ends are slightly lower. Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
