Unresponsive Unraid Server

Featured Replies

I am having the above issue with my unraid server.  Here is a little background:

1.  My server is virtualized.

2.  I was in the process of replacing my cache drive.

3.  While I was trying to shut everything down I made a mistake and my datastore got disconnected.  Unraid was in the process of shutting down.  Since this incident, the server has been very sluggish to unresponsive.  The server is now very unresponsive during telnet seesions, command line.  Attempting to connect to the webgui.  Initially I can connect to the webgui but then it becomes unresponsive.  It is even unresponsive issuing the powerdown command during telnet.

Here is what i have done for trouble shooting:

1. Clean booted as per posts.  This did not seem to make a difference.

2.  Created a different VM.  No difference.

3.  Followed posts for restarting emhttp.  No difference.

4.  It will perform a parity check with no errors.

Please help me resolve this problem.  Right now my files are accessable but the server is virtually unusable.  I use the server to stream/store movies, backup to it, and to serve up lighthttp to iskin2.

I was able to reboot the server but now it is going through a parity check.  I issued the command "reboot" though telnet and it responded.  It is currently conducting a parity check which I will let it finish but the problem I face is I will give it the necessary time and I cannot connect the the webgui and telnet is very unresponsive.  I am attaching a new syslog from right after the reboot.

My thoughts:

1.  Should I consider a clean install.  I could do this by rebooting and gathering as much info as I can.  I currently have screen shots but they are a little old.  This would definitely be a big hassle.

2.  I have been contemplating moving it back to a physical server but again this would entail quite alot considering this might not even solve the problem.

After the reboot I did attempt to stream a bluray movie.  It started but then froze and stopped after a couple of minutes of the movie.  Heck if it wasn't so costly I would even consider creating a second unraid then moving the data and fixing this one.  I have been wanting to but I need to wait until at least July (due to $$)

I am so hoping someone will see the problem and help me fix it without to much issue.

Thanks for reading and taking the time to help

Nothing unusual in the syslog.

Are you loading plugins?  If so, perhaps one or more is starting prior to the unRAID array being available, preventing it from starting?

(it is a VERY common problem with earlier versions of some plugins)

In any case, disable the plugins until this is resolved.  (unMENU is safe)

The array starts and I can access the webgui initially but the webgui becomes unresponsive and I can no longer access it.  Although I can acces most of unmenu.  I did perform a clean boot with no change.  The thrid sys log I provided was right after I lost access to the webgui.  Ideas

Sorry, never worked with aVM.

I'd look to ensure the server has a unique IP address and a unique MAC address.  That would really mess up the networking.

Are you virtualizing with ESXi?  If so I'd recommend trying to boot from the unRAID usb stick and see if the problem persists.  That way you get a sense of whether it has to do with the host or the VM.

  • Author

I am virtualizing the server.  I was afraid of that.  Something else that is weird.  I used to be able to issue the command "powerdown" via telnet now it does not respond to the command

  • Author

So Last night I unvirtualized unraid to a physical machine.  It boots fine and the array started fine but the problem continues.  It is the exact same issue as before.  I can access unmenu but only for a very short time can I access the weigui.  Once I lose access I have to reboot.  When I reboot it only gets me back into the webgui temporarily.

Now I guess I might need to consider a reinstall.  Can you suggest the safest way to perfrom a fresh install without losing data?  Right now I am running Unraid 5rc8 but I am thinking I might go ahead and install the latest suggested RC and beging the reinstall process.

chkdsk the flashdrive and upgrade to the latest version, if problem persist post a syslog.

Well I am so overwhelmed with this stupid issue.  My server has now been down for almost a week with no hope in sight.  Everything I try is not making a difference???  Checkdisk does find isues with the usb, it found and move files to a found folder.  I conducted the upgrade to rc12.  The webgui and overall usability of the server is nil still.  I don't even know where to go to next.  I post my syslog files and everyone states they look good.  SO what next????????  frustration frustration frustration.  I have alot of data on this server and want to get this functioning again so I can begin using it again.

Please help

I would suggest the following (you may have already tried some of these, so pass on them) and at each stage attempt to ascertain whether system response is okay (to eliminate any complications, do this on 'bare metal':

1) Make a full and total backup of all files/directories on your flash drive.

2) Try booting in maintenance mode (if you have sufficient access to the web gui to set this).

3) Revert to standard flash drive configuration - standard 'go' file and all plugin/custom folders empty.  Boot back into normal running configuration.

If this results in a system with normal response, it is clear that one of your addons, or customisations, is causing your troubles.  Try adding them back, one at a time until you find which one causes the problem.

4) If step 3 didn't result in a responsive system, then create a new, virgin, boot drive (free, three-drive system).  If you can find a couple of spare drives, then use these to build a temporary system.

If you have no spare drives, then I believe that you can do the following without risking your data (but invalidating your parity).  (Please wait for one of the experts to confirm this, before you proceed!)

Use two of your live data drives to build a small system - add them to the configuration but do not accept any invitation to FORMAT the drives.

Check system responsiveness.  If it is still not good, then your problems are related to hardware.

5) Go back to your live flash drive (you do still have a backup, don't you?), and format it/recreate the boot system from scratch.  Add your key file.  Boot the system and check responsiveness (before configuring any drives).

Add your data drives back into to the configuration (Do not accept any invitation to FORMAT!).

6) Add your parity drive and recalculate parity

7) Re-add your customisations (one at a time?) - modified 'go' file, plugins, packages and other addons.

I know that some of these steps seem to be quite drastic, but you do seem to be at an impasse.  Does any of this give you a clue as to where the problem lies?

Also: let memtest run a couple of cycles to make sure nothing is wrong there.. (boot option with unraid)

When I unvirtualized the server I put it on a completely different machine.

Thank ypu for taking your time.  You are right I have performed some of these but may not exactly the same,  SO I am going to make another backup of the flash since I upgraded.  I will revert the go file back to stock and delete everything out of the plugin, custom and extra folders.  I will boot and see if that helps.  I performed (renamed those folders and commented out any custom addons to my GO file before and it did not make a difference but I will try it your way to see if that make a difference.

2.  I can come up with 2 drives but when I unvirtualized the server I put it on different hardware.

3.  I am pretty sure this will be the next step but I want to guard my data as much as possible so I was a little concerned about this.  Reinstalling is going to be fun.  I don't have a lot of customizations but not sure I remember I did everything.  I have yamj installed, a web server and it dependancies (lighttpd), unmenu (I used this to install the webserver and its dependancies.

My problems are my own fault because I was shutting everything down on my esxi server and moved a drive cage (that contained the datastore) and did not realized how tight the sata cable was and unraid was the one shutting down.  The datastore beame unplugged in the midst of everything.  So not I am trying to revert everything back to normal and am contemplating whether or not to return unraid back to virtual.  It definitely has advantage and disadvantages.  One thing I do know is I want a different case with the hot swap slots to make it easy to add and remove drives!!!  This all started because I was replacing my cache drive..

So I would definitely like to get input on the best plan to accomplish a fresh install and not lose my data.  WHat I have so far:

I own a unraid server pro license.  I started with 4.7 version and upgraded a while back to v5rc8a.  Recently due to issues I upgraded to 5rc12 (this did not resolve my issue).  So now I am wanting to perform a completely new install while still maintaining my data.

1.  Backup my flash.  Just to make sure this is the best way to backup the flash, I remove it from my unraid server.  Insert it into a windows box.  Select all, copy and paste. I have screenshot of my drive setup.  If I can access the webgui, is there any other screenshots I should take?

2.  Download V5rc12a.  Follow the instructions from here:  http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=UnRAID_Server_Version_5.0-beta_Release_Notes  I will follow this section specifically:

Installation on a New Flash Device

To make a bootable USB Flash device using Windows (XP/Vista/Win7), follow these steps:

Plug your USB Flash device into your Windows PC.

Open 'My Computer' (XP) or 'Computer' (Vista/Win7) and right-click your Flash device. Click 'Format...', set the volume label to UNRAID and then click 'Start'. Important: the volume label must be set exactly to UNRAID (all caps).

Click on your Flash device (to open it) and drag then entire contents of the unRAID Server zip file to the Flash.

For Windows XP, click on the file 'make_bootable'. A DOS window will open and run the 'syslinux' utility on the Flash. For Windows Vista or Windows 7, right-click on the file 'make_bootable' and select 'Run as administrator'.

Once again, right-click your Flash device in 'My Computer' or 'Computer' and then click 'Eject'. Your Flash device is now ready to boot into unRAID Server OS.

3.  Then copy the pro key license and config folder back to the flash drive.

4.  Boot up unraid.  Access the webgui, assign disks to the array and check the status of the array.

What did I forget and how am I doing on formulating my plan?

Thanks for you time

So I went ahead and created 2 new flash drives (and purchased the necessary keys) with a fresh install of unraid 5rc12a.  I am looking to confirm what I need to do next.  My thought is to copy the config folder over (except key due to these being a new flash drive)and then boot up the server.  Am I correct.

We still don't know what is causing your problems - it may be that there is some corruption in your config.

Agreed

So I got unraid going using my new drives but:

The free booted

then I inserted the key

It booted fine

then I copied my config over (minus my old key and go file and any other folder not stock)

It boot fine

I installed unmenu

Things seemed fine

then I installed lighttpd (separately due to the one included in unmenu stated it was incompatible with v5)

This is when I ran into problems once again.  I lost the webgui, then I lost unmenu.

Here is how I installed lighttpd:  wget -O /tmp/unweb.tgz http://www.tcpatools.com/bubba/unraidweb-0.1.05-i386-bubba.tgz ;  installpkg /tmp/unweb.tgz

So next I started fresh gain:

Same procedure as above except I did not install unmenu and I installed lighttpd server through the plugin functionality.

http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=12698.msg120524#msg120524  here is what I did:1. Download the "SimpleFeatures Plugins" zip from our Google Code page. Choose the plugins you wish to install. The Base package is required for all other packages to run.

2. Create folder called "plugins" inside the root folder of the flash drive - "/boot/plugins"

3. Copy in the plugins (must have .plg extension) you wish to have installed.

4. Reboot. If it looks funny, please clear your browser cache!

Quite honestly I cannot remember if I installed lighttpd without copying my config folder over.

So I guess if there is something up with the config folder what is the best way to troubleshoot the issue.  What in the config fold coulf affect the lighttpd server?

By the way the farthest  got with lighttpd was basic install no configuration due to not remembering what the correct path is to serve up my iskin/iskin2 files.

What are the thoughts?

Thanks again for you time

Are you sure that this isn't a simple case of conflicting run time libraries being loaded?

No I am not.  I am using the one from a thread stating it is compatible with unraid 5

or both trying to use port 80?/quote]

I cannot speak for the simplefeature app but I have installed the lighttpd before and it defaults to port 89 upon installation.

My next step I am contemplating is reinstall and not copy the config folder.  Setup the array (using screenshots).  I am not sure what will happen with my shares though (any insight into this).  Make sure everything is happy.  Then install lighttpd and see is it happens again.  I am going to probably try the simplefeature way again.  Thoughts/suggestions?

It appears the SQLite library I link to in the plugin has been removed.

This is one of the frustrating things about the current plugin architecture in v5. If it fails to download a package, the previous packages have still been installed and overwritten (eg PHP binaries). There is no easy way to reverse this, without having to spend a lot of time on bash scripts to ensure files are backed up first. Meh.

If you're wanting to run lighttpd right now, best thing to do is to wait for the next release of unRAID. I believe Tom is in an advanced state of migrating the webGUI to lighttpd, meaning you'll have a great web server from the start. I'll also be updating my plg to reflect the change in the SQLite package location.

Cheers

So is the package in "simplefeatures" the same package as unraid-web?
