Drive not reporting temperature

Featured Replies

I have re-added a 1.5 TB hard drive that I previously upgraded to a 3.0TB drive.

I am now running RC11, and the newly re-installed 1.5TB drive is not reporting its temperature in the web UI when I spin up all the drives.  This is the only drive of 19 drives not reporting its temperature.

The drive previously reported its temperature the last time it was installed some months ago.

Well, there is your answer - the drive is not returning any SMART parameters.  I'm not sure why, but this makes interesting reading.

Certain firmware on this series of drives NEEDS replacing, however mine does not, it is newer than the "bad" firmware versions.

I ran the pre-clear procedure on this drive before re-installing it, which includes smart readings I believe?

Plus I have had it running for years without trouble, including temperature.

I re-started the server just in case it made a different, no difference.

I re-ran the smart report, and it fails.

Anything I can try?

The most interesting bit is the last section, talking about the 'special microcode' failing, with a variety of strange symptoms.

Clearly, your drive is accepting the SMART command, and responding to it, but failing to return all the expected data (or returning it in a form which smartctl fails to handle - unspecified I/O errors are reported).  Unless there is some special configuration which allows control of which SMART data is returned, it is possible that there is a firmware/microcode failure on the drive controller pcb.

Reading your original post, it would seem that you are using this drive, reading and writing data, without problems so it would seem that the I/O errors are not general.  However, it might be worth trying the drive on another SATA interface, with a different cable and, perhaps, a different power connection.

What else can you try?  Re-flash the firmware or change the controller pcb.

Clearly, this problem is not related to unRAID in any way, and a mod should move this thread to a more appropriate section

power cycle.  If that does not do it...

disable, then re-enable smart output.

smartctl --smart=off /dev/sdX

smartctl --smart=on /dev/sdX

Yes, I can read and write to the disk just fine, no issues there.

I re-started the server once, no change.

I ran the commands to disable and re-enable smart, and the commands worked, it reported smart disabled then re-enabled.

I re-ran the smart report, results are attached.  I'm not sure if it is still not reporting results or not, I cannot read it myself.

Thank you for the help!

SmartSDS.txt

It's still failing to report all the SMART parameters.

Sounds like its SMART firmware had called it quits... (  Danger Will Robinson, ... Danger  )

I don't know if I'd trust it, or not... as you cannot monitor its health.  (not worth the aggravation, RMA it )

I will replace it with a different drive, then RMA it after testing a smart report in a windows box.

If I can get a SMART report off windows, I will post back, otherwise assume the issue is closed.

Thank you for the assistance!
