I've got a 1.5 WD drive that I suspect is dying. If I pre-clear it with three passes, you think it'd be okay to use in the array?

    What makes you suspect it is dying?  What does a smart report show?

     

    Preclear it with 3 passes, then compare the before and after smart reports.  If the current reallocated sectors and pending sectors attributes are still 0, then I would personally feel comfortable using it.  Even if it had a very low number, say less than 10, reallocated sectors and 0 pending and the reallocated sectors count didn't increase during the preclears it would still probably be ok to use, but I'd keep an eye on it.
