Featured Replies

I just had a red ball, ive pulled a smart report i was wondering if someone can help me decipher whats wrong. I just restarted the server after it being off all day while i was at work. Im assuming I should ren a preclear on it and then give the drive one more chance in my array. Its a WD 1.5tb EADS but as you can tell by the lifetime i dont use it very often until i put it in my array a few weeks ago.

The drive looks fine, check cabling... issues there can cause red balls without the drive having any issues..

Check power supply (and cabling)

The drive heads have emergency retracted 385 times as power loss was detected by the drive.

12 Power_Cycle_Count      0x0032  100  100  000    Old_age  Always      -      667

192 Power-Off_Retract_Count 0x0032  200  200  000    Old_age  Always      -      385

Could be an intermittant connection, a bad drive tray, or a power supply splitter/connector, or just a power supply too small for the total number of drives.  Once those are checked, it could still be an electrical issue in the drive itself.

Here are the equivalent counts from one of the drives in my server (zero power off retracts) so you can compare:

12 Power_Cycle_Count      0x0032  253  253  000    Old_age  Always      -      236

192 Power-Off_Retract_Count 0x0032  253  253  000    Old_age  Always      -      0
