Start over but keep data

Featured Replies

Hi - I upgraded to unRAID Beta 5rc12a over the weekend, but since then I have been having quite a few issues. I have a Supermicro MBD-X9SCM-F-O with 16GB of RAM and unless I boot unRAID with some command I found to limit the RAM to ~ 4GB the machine will reboot when larger operations occur (transfers, unpacking from SAB, etc). Also, SimpleFeatures hasn't worked for me since I upgraded from 5rc8.

I've used unRAID for a few years, but I've upgraded from 4.7 to 5rc12a through several steps and was thinking it may be a good time to start over, but preserve my data (of course)

I had a few questions before starting, though, and I've searched the forum but couldn't really find my questions answered in one place, so I figured I'd see what the Brain-Trust™ had for opinions.

I'm not in a huge rush, as things work when I boot accessing just 4GB, so any information or insight is very appreciated.

[*]Will it be possible to nuke most of my thumb-drive (outside of the Pro license) and start over? I'd like to keep the data on the drives and don't care if I need to re-do the parity.

[*]Is it worth it to load ESXi on the machine? I've heard there are some issues with Ivy Core earlier, but since I don't use it I am not as familiar with the issues and limitations (if any). My wife and I are expecting a child any day, so I'd also like to do this quickly without losing access to the data, as my primary use is as a server for HTPCs set about the house... but I think my server may be overkill for just an unRAID server.

Thanks for any information or insight. I really do appreciate any help that can be provided, as I feel like I'm at the limit of what I can do without more information. Any current and relevant links are also appreciated!

Thanks once more!

Because unRAID boots from Flash, and runs with a memory disk as system drive, 'starting over' is usually unnecessary - it's not like have to format and re-install windows.

In any case, there is a known problem in rc12 with the motherboard you're using and more than 4GB RAM - 'starting over' is unlikely to make any difference.

Also, I understand that there is a performance problem with Simple Features and RC12 - the developer is looking inti this.

Oh - thanks, that's great to hear (honestly it is... I'd rather know there was a known issue with both... it'll stop me from going crazy).

If you do want to clean things up and get back to the "stock" system just follow the directions in dgashck's signature. Probably should be an item:

1a. Rename the /boot(flash)/plugins directory.

since the new SimpleFeatures install instructions specifies there instead of /boot/config/plugins

Thanks! I had done that already, but must have missed where SimpleFeatures got moved. I appreciate the heads up.

It is? I have this mobo and I don't receive random reboots, can I ask where there's a discussion on this? And what the symptoms are? And if it's going to be fixed?

Only thing I've noticed since upgrading to RC12 is insanely slow unrars & par2 checks (Like, hours on end for unrars, about 20 minutes for par2 on items that use to take ~ 10 seconds), is that a symptom?

Hmmm... was thinking about trying the latest rc myself.  Is the >4Gb problem only with the X9SCM motherboards or also with the X(SCL (which is what I own)?

Thanks!

I didn't say that the 'random reboots' were a known symptom, but it's suspicious that the OP appears to have resolved the issue by restricting available memory, making me believe that there may be a connection.

Very slow writes is definitely a symptom of the X9SCM/>4GB problem.  To the best of my knowledge, Tom is still investigating this.

What my post was really getting at was the Windows mentality of - "There's something wrong with my computer, I'll have to format and re-install".

The only issue that this approach is likely to address with unRAID would be if the flash drive is failing.

As far as I'm aware, Tom has not been able to characterise this issue yet.  There are reports of X9SCM systems being affected by this problem, but there are also reports of X9SCM systems which do not seem to be affected.  There have also been reports of a couple of other systems (not Supermicro) which would appear to be suffering from the same problem.

I have not seen any reports of X9SCL or X9SCM-ii (which is what I use) being affected.

Yeah - the code...

label unRAID OS (MAX 4GB RAM)
  menu default
  kernel bzimage
  append  mem=4095M initrd=bzroot

...placed in my syslinux.cfg seems to work for now. I'd really enjoy my 16GB of RAM, and the last two or three RCs seem to make things worse than better (the slow transfer speeds with my board unless I put "sysctl vm.highmem_is_dirtyable=1" in my go file, the random reboots, I was having problems with Plugins...). Is there any thread where this is information is being collected? I didn't see one when I looked through the forum or ran a search, but if more is known or I can add to it, I'd be happy to help.

Do you by any chance know if any configuration files/ect are changed from R8 to R12? Since, I'm going to downgrade if this is an issue (I wasn't getting it in R8), and, I just want to verify that my configuration files won't be invalid to R8 when usable on R12.

Thanks Peter... I haven't been able to find anything on the X9SCL myself, so maybe it is only with certain X9SCM combos.  Guess the only way to find out is to take the plunge!
