May 28, 201313 yr Actually not all of Hitachi is owned by WD. Toshiba owns a part of Hitachi as well and they are putting out some/all of the 3.5 inch drives. This one is cross labled as Toshiba and Hitachi for instance and has the old Hitachi model number and serial numbers.

This one is cross labled as Toshiba and Hitachi for instance and has the old Hitachi model number and serial numbers. Yup, Hitachi (not HGST) owns like 10% of WD. The drive you linked looks like an OEM labeling, not a HGST owned by Toshiba. Kind of like the Dell or EMC labeled drives. Label EMC, but Seagate numbers and fine print. It's not like the labels are preprinted and theybused old stock. Either way, HGST drives are going to be in the market. The 5k4000 may have limited availability at times, but it is not vaporware. By late 2012 I would have expected Toshiba labeling to be like WD's, indicating HGST owned by WD. The plant swapping was March or May timeframe.
