Noob: Syslog shows error opening /boot/config/super.dat

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm a noob configuring my first Unraid server.

Running Unraid 5.0-rc12a

Core i3 - 8 Gb RAM

3 drives all unassigned as yet (1 - 3TB WD EARX, 2 - 2TB WD EARX)

(not sure what other system details to provide so please let me know)

I powered up my server and noticed this error in the Syslog file.  Did a search on the forums and can't find anything definitive on if it is a problem or not so wanted to ask?

Should I be concerned?

Thanks,

PS In case this has any effect on my problem I ran one preclear cycle on each drive and it finished successfully, then the OS started to zero out all the drives but I did not get an email confirmation that the zero process finished successfully.

Unraid_syslog.txt

Try running check disk against the flash drive on a Windows system

Sent via a phone. Sorry for any typos.

I recall seeing that error on a fresh unraid installation.  I think the super.dat file is not created until a disk is assigned.  You can check to see if the file exists with the command:

ls /boot/config/super.dat

Or just assign a disk and see if the error stops showing up in the syslog.

It will not exist until you assign one or more drives.  The message is completely normal if you've not set set any array configuration.

The OS never zeros drives if there is no disk configuration and the disks are not yet assigned.

It only zeros a drive if an array is already established AND then you add an additional data drive and that data drive does not have a preclear-signature.

It will calculate parity once you assign a parity drive.  It will need to format the data drives once you assign them.

unRAID has no built-in mail alerts.  Unless you've installed an add-on, don't expect ANY mail, because no mail command exists to use to send it.
