Newly added HDD is not filling up as fast as the 2 existing drives

Featured Replies

I have just added a new drive to my existing unraid.  The 2 x 2TB drives are almost used up, so I added a 3rd 2TB onto the same share, highwater setting, split level 3.  I download a lot of tv series, wherein the setup is Media/TV/TVshow/Season_X.  For my Movies, I have Media/Movies1/Movie_title.  I download more TV than movies.  Before I added a 3rd drive to the array, the 1st drive have only about 900MB left, the 2nd drive have only about 800MB left.  When I added the 3rd drive, though it's starting to fill up, some more shows still go to the 1st and 2nd drive.  Is this because of the split level thing?  How do I remedy this problem?  I go to Media, TV, move the TVshow to a temp location, then copy it back?  Will this split it evenly on all 3 drives?

Highwater will almost never split equally between drives.  Also, if a specific "season" directory already exists below the split level on a given disk, it will be used.  (probably why your TV shows are being added as you are seeing. The season would be level4 (as you described your hierarchy), so shows are being added to the existing "season" on the current disk.

If you want equal use, you'll probably be better off with "Most Free" rather than the highwater setting. (especially with equal size data disks)

As Joe noted, you can change to "most free" to get more equal distribution of data on the disks;  or you can change your split level so it's not forcing as much on a single drive (although that could result in multiple drive spinups to watch a single show).

Or you can just do nothing ... there's really no reason to worry about what's written where -- that's the whole idea of the shares ... all of your space is available when it's needed => does it really matter if all the free space is on one drive or spread across several?

I just set my split level to zero so that I have to control where things are written and I only write to the disk shares and read from the user shares.

At least that is what I originally thought.  I may have to rethink that policy since other files get updated thru the user shares that are not the media files I moved to unraid and they are getting scattered about.  Managable so far but would like to not have to manually move them any more.  Didn't think about that when I originally when this route.  For the media files it made sense I don't have a cache drive and I just write in bursts of data to the disk shares.  So why worry about it.  The updates to edl, txt and properties files kind of spoiled that.
