Possible AsRock Mobo/CPU Problem

Featured Replies

Hello. I have the 890FX Deluxe3 Mobo and it has a little LED reader and I just noticed it shows FF (FF Please check if the CPU is installed correctly and then clear CMOS.) I cant tell you What it used to say. Maybe it was always FF. I reseated the CPU and same thing although i did not clear the CMOS... Is this because there is no Windows OS or something or does that not matter. I have had random problems here and there that just seem to come and go. I havent had too many problems lately. Am I reading to much into this? Is there anything I can do to see if my CPU is having problems? Thanks for taking the time!

If it's displaying an error code, then you should pay attention to it.

Clear CMOS and see if that resolves this.

Also, what BIOS revision are you running -- and what CPU do you have installed?

Ok garycase i will not ignore thank you. I think i cleared the CMOS...It has a clear cmos button on the back of the machine...i restarted the server then i pressed that...i actually have never used the button before...nothing was on the screen after a bout a minute so i press the restart button. i dont know if the cmos actually cleared...dont know how to confirm that...im in the BIOS now and it says the version is P1.40...I am using AMD Athlon II X2 250 Regor 3.0GHz

**just incase i went ahead and cleared the cmos using the jumper onboard...

It's not clear from the CPU compatibility page on Asrock's site exactly which line applies to your CPU; but I THINK you're okay -- the 3000MHz versions all seem to be supported as of BIOS vP1.20.  Others, however, show "since P1.80" .. so clearly the CPU support was improved in the newer BIOS versions.  The most current version for your board is P1.90

In general, you don't want to update a BIOS unless you're having some issue ... but I'd say the warning you're getting is certainly an "issue".    If clearing the CMOS didn't resolve your error code, I'd go ahead and update the BIOS and see if that resolves it.

Note:  If you're not sure whether or not you actually cleared the CMOS, then do this:  unplug the system;  remove the motherboard battery;  wait about ten minutes;  then replace the battery, plug in the system, and turn it on.

alright thanks garycase! i had to search long and hard for this ff code...it wasnt in the mobo manual...http://www.asrock.com/support/faq.asp?id=334...well ive been experiencing random problems and everything ive tried in past never fully resolved it so i think ill flash to bios to newest update 1.90 thanks....im sure i cleared the CMOS with the jumper...i wasnt sure about using the reset button but i bet that worked as it was intended. Thank you for taking the time to help!

upgraded to latest bios 1.90 still FF warning on that display...i guess ill monitor it for now...and see if I can get my hands on another CPU maybe?...

Are you SURE the segments are lit?    The list of codes on page 33 of the manual doesn't show an "FF" code.

ftp://174.142.97.10/manual/890FX%20Deluxe3.pdf

Do you have a different manual?  Where did you see that "FF" meant "Please check if the CPU is installed correctly and then clear CMOS" ??

In any event, if all's working well, I'd just not worry about it.

Yeah all segments are lite because when it cycles up it has like 8's on it then eventually lands on FF...i didnt see it in my manual I had to search for it... http://www.asrock.com/support/faq.asp?id=334

and yeah if things are going ok for now ill probably leave it as is and then focus on the CPU as a starting point...thanks!

"Random problems" can also stem from memory issues. If you haven't already tried it, reseat the memory sticks and run a few cycles of memtest86 that appears at boot time with unRAID.

Thanks for response. I have swapped Memory and done memtest even just recently swapped PSU just incase but with it being random i dont know if im in the clear or not yet ha...will wait and see...thanks!

It can take a good while for random issues to re-appear.  I think you've confirmed the power's okay now; but one thing that wouldn't hurt is to do a long MemTest run ... let it run at least 24 hours.  I've seen cases where it took a long time (10-12 hrs) before errors would begin to show up.

i ran memtest a few weeks ago i always give it 24 hours when i run it...i can try running it again just to see what happens...it always passed the tests everytime i ran it but i just swapped the memory because it was cheap...prices have gone up a lot for ddr3 recently! sucks haha thanks again!

Sounds like you've reasonably eliminated memory as a possible cause  :)

i think so but who knows if memtest is 100% accurate...but im sure its close enough lol  :o

FWIW, MemTest is absolutely NOT 100% accurate.  There are some chipsets that cause "false positives" with MemTest -- reporting errors that aren't actually errors.    But in those cases the "failures" are virtually instantaneous.    If MemTest is running cleanly, and eventually reports an error (or two), it's fairly certain that there are indeed some stability issues.
