May 20, 201313 yr Currently I have my music spread out between desktop/laptop/external hard drives. I'll be consolidating it all on my unRAID server (5rc) and was curious if there is anything I should check out besides just browsing to the share to play music? I use XBMC (Win 7) in our living room and that is where most of the music will be played, so I will most likely be using the XBMC application to play in that room unless there is a better solution. so..... Is there any method of playing the same thing to two different devices? (some song playing on the xbmc and on a laptop in another room) Anything to organize and get meta data and images for all my music or should that be done on the xbmc side? What functionality would Subsonic provide for LAN use? Sorry if these seeem like stupid questions but I'm pretty new to this. Maybe the answer is just map the share and play with your prefered player, just thought there might be something cool I'm missing!
May 20, 201313 yr Is there any method of playing the same thing to two different devices? (some song playing on the xbmc and on a laptop in another room) You can play the same content on as many different devices as UnRAID is capable of streaming to ... and for most purposes, you're not likely to ever hit that limit unless you're talking BD movies I can play the same DVD movie on 5 different PC's with no issues -- and music is a FAR less intensive stream. The only issue may be if you're using an UnRAID plug-in to do this that has its own built-in restrictions ... and I don't know the answer to that (I don't use plug-ins). Maybe the answer is just map the share and play with your prefered player, just thought there might be something cool I'm missing! That's exactly what I do ... if there's "something cool" that is "slicker", then I'm missing it too !!
May 20, 201313 yr Author Thanks, thats what I figured. As for streaming to multiple devices, I mean actually using the same stream as in synced music like having the same radio station on in different rooms. If that makes sense.

Ahh ... that's a different issue. That would indeed require a plug-in that can support that feature with multiple clients; and even then you could have network latency issues that may cause very slight timing differences among the clients. Whether it would be enough that you could audibly hear it I don't know. Caveat: I do NOT use these, but according to several posts on AVS Forums, these two products both work well at doing synchronized playback: http://www.mysqueezebox.com/download http://sinderon.com/software.htm
May 20, 201313 yr I used to use Subsonic all the time for my streaming needs. There is a Plugin or two floating around here on the forum.
May 20, 201313 yr Going to have to recommend Subsonic also, perfect for my streaming needs, and family across the country too, and it also streams video too
May 21, 201313 yr Author Can it stream a the same thing playing simultaneously (synchronized) to multiple devices? For example could I put on a song and have a device in the living room and the kitchen both playing it. I'm not sure what the proper term for this is but some sort of single stream multicast with multiple end points.

I'm interested in the answer to that as well ... but it's certainly NOT mentioned in the manual or FAQ on the website. From what I've read, the best choice for simultaneous streaming is Sinderon.
May 24, 201313 yr It would require purchasing hardware but Sonos will do what you want. http://www.sonos.com/system
May 24, 201313 yr It would require purchasing hardware but Sonos will do what you want. http://www.sonos.com/system I have a friend with a Sonos system & he loves it. However, I think this question is about how to do it within an existing infrastructure by streaming the music via software. ... but nevertheless I'd agree that Sonos is worth considering.
May 26, 201313 yr i am using Plex for it.. perhaps not ideal to have a TV on while listening to music but i can stream it to my ipad when i am on the road
