HP ProLiant Microserver Gen8 Specs Leaked

I like the new model. For me, If it supports ESX it will be perfect.

It makes a nice small business/soho file/adminstration server.

I usually run 2 adminstration servers which house my dns/tftp/bootp/ssh/ftp proxy/http proxy/ss5 proxy and an ftp server.

For me this works out really well as it will have more horsepower for ESX with a small unraid environment underneath.

The switches that fit on top is a nice addition in my network.

All the soho equipment I use is in a half height rack. :)  The sexiness of the older Microservers is in their flexibility and small form factor. I just think the new model looses some of the flexibility in an attempt to get an even smaller form factor.  Though I have to admit, creating their own modular system is good from a marketing perspective. To each his own though. :)

Losing the room for a fifth 3.5 inch drive is a big fail in my opinion. At least you could fit a 2.5 inch laptop drive in the ODD slot for a cache drive.

You can actually easily fit 6 3.5" drives in the case and there are 6 SATA ports in total. The Gen8 Microserver has only 5 SATA ports. And costs about 4x as much (UK prices).

I believe there is 1 SATA port internally for the ODD -- maybe you could fit an SSD or 2.5" HDD: http://blog.themonsta.id.au/exclusive-internal-photos-of-the-hp-microserver-g8-leaked/

Yeah, but the internal HDD came with the older MicroServers already which is a nice bonus. I just wish HP had made it just a wee bit bigger and retained the full size 5.25" bay and 6 SATA slots. That really would be perfect for unRAID Plus. Oh well, at least with current drive densities (up to 4TB), having only 4 slots isn't too restrictive. I reckon I'll just use the free version of unRAID for this one (for 8TB of data). That or Windows 7+SnapRAID or FlexRAID and use it as CableCARD DVR.

The Gen8 may be 2x the speed of the N54L, but at current (UK) prices, I could buy nearly 6x N54Ls or 1x Gen8 G2020T.

Alas, no such deals here. I think cheapest I've seen it is around $250 after rebate. That's still half the price of the Gen8 G2020T, though.

Hi mates

The new G8 microsever processor can be upgraded to a better one.

http://b3n.org/installed-xeon-e3-1230v2-in-gen8-hp-microserver/

At the end ot that post you have a list of the processor working or supposed to work with it.

My new G8 will arrive at early september, so I will write a review for unraid forums.

After googling a bit for pictures the CPU heatstink looks farely tall, so probably it should be possible to attach a slim cpu cooler like  the Noctua NH-L9i with only 37mm wich can alllow up to 65W TDP

http://www.noctua.at/main.php?show=productview&products_id=50&lng=en

Other option could be this cablematic VU81 cpu cooler with only 15mm tall, remmenber that coolers for LGA-1156 and LGA-1155 are full compatible between them.

I Known that there are only one Fan take in the motherboard, but you can split the cable and connect a second one whitout connecting the pwn wire.

Hey guys,

Has anyone managed to get the Gen 8 to work on unRAID? I am about to purchase the HW to start building my NAS enviroment  and I have the choice of either

HP ProLiant MicroServer G8 Gen8 or

HP ProLiant N54L MicroServer

The price difference is $90 and I am wondering if it makes sense to buy the Gen 8 over N54L.

I have seen plenty of posts about getting the N54L working on unRaid but nothing much on the Gen 8. I don’t want to shoot myself on the foot by getting this and not being able to get it to work for my purpose.

Any helpful recommendations or suggestion are appreciated.

Thanks
