September 25, 201312 yr I was also going to add that unless I'm mistaken I can't run plex on Linux or my pivos... But I can run PleXBMC on XBMC which is another reason people might be running "both" For the record I only use plex for remote viewing, everything local I use XBMC. But there is some stuff I'm starting to like with plex. Start any video anywhere, phone, tablet laptop and it has the same resume point and it's in the "on deck" section. Yes I know XBMC with mysql can also do that (that's my current setup) buit it's not as easily cross platform for mobile viewing. FYI as far as I know (just started with plex) you can change/add an agent (scraper) to read XBMC exported nfo's. Just my opinion of this. I tried PleXBMC and went back to just XBMC after a couple of days. As mentioned for transcoding Plex is great, but I lost so much functionality of my XBMC set up that I thought it wasn't worth it. Also Plex does it's own scraping unless you get a plug which forces it to scrape your data. After I had everything set up with Plex, I went right back to XBMC with a SQL DB and haven't looked back. Could you tell me what troubles you had with plex/what functionally you lost? I have been wondering what the negative side effects would be. I'm starting to consider going to PleXBMC as the main way to watch my stuff. The beauty of PleXBMC though, is you can have both installed without them effecting each other so you can see which you like. (Sorry to get off topic bobintb)
September 25, 201312 yr right but why use them both? more the most part, each can do what the other can, so why install both of them? Well, it's a matter of personal preference really. No different than using unRAID in stock form or adding plugins like BTSync, or SickBeard, SAB, CouchP, etc etc.. it's the end-users choice to add, delete or modify their unRAID box based on personal preference or $$$. If you want unRAID just to store data, then it works. If you want to use BTSYNC for unRAID to store your laptops data, good. If you want to archive your DVD's, BlueRays, and Music CD's you do that as well. No one asks, "why use unRAID just for data storage of work files. Why do you use it for media?" It doesn't make sense to ask this question. As I said, unRAID content can be made available locally and remotely on different types of products and it just makes sense to use the product that best suits the end-users needs, again, based on cost, personal preference, reliability, etc.. In my experience the last several years, XBMC is not a good choice for remote viewing, its not reliable due to delays in loading, stutter, pause/downloading/buffering, failure of the user interface etc... Plex on different remote devices (laptop, desktop, Roku's, iPads, iPhones) is more reliable and rarely have I had an issue even viewing Plex on a iPhone 4 or 3GS I use for testing. Plex just works. In fact I run XBMC on a Zotac ID41-U (openelec 3.2.0, ACE skinned) on my primary flat screen, and run Plex on my Roku in my bedroom and 5 other relatives who have Roku's I have given them. With Plex I can (and have) "invite(d)" as many guests as I like and share my media. IMHO we can't narrowly apply unRAID and all it's potential to just one type of use. I suppose it stands to reason that's why there are so many plugins being developed; because people want to use unRAID in the best way it suits them. It's all about innovation. Move forward.
September 25, 201312 yr As a side note and main topic here, SALUD, I don't use it, but I may do so when I need it. However, and this is important imho, when developing a plugin / app, one has to take into consideration the other plugins being developed by other people, as all these .plg's need to play nice with one another and not adversely affect the unRAID experience.

Its hard to expect them to insure 100% compatibility with all addons when an addon can be built and install any packages it wants.

It is advising on a standard that should be applied by all authors. Stands to reason to label Plugins as either ALPHA or BETA, until further review/scrutiny. This way people really know they need to be cautious when installing anything not "certified to be safe or compatible" with unRAID ver. 4.X, 5.X and it's other plugins, or run it on a test system first. Perhaps if authors scrutinized their code as much as Tom has with unRAID we'd have uniformity and agreement.
September 25, 201312 yr Author i don't think i'm quite getting my question across. plex is really 2 parts, the player as the frontend and the media server as the backend. with xbmc it would be xbmc as the frontend and mysql as the backend, minus all the transcoding and remote play features plex has (yea, i know the mysql part wouldn't really be considered the backend but this is for illustration purposes). i understand that due to personal preference some people like to use the plex media server backend with xbmc frontend and in that sense you can "use both" but that's not what i am referring to. as far as unraid goes, there is no xbmc or plex frontend. there is the plex media server, and the xbmc headless with mysql which is just the database managing part, the equivalent to plex media server, both the backends. in this sense, why use both? i use xbmc+sql backend because i don't need all the extra stuff plex media server does. if i did, i would use plex media server as the backend and xbmc as the frontend because i prefer the xbmc player over plex. i just don't see the point of having 2 backends to your system when just running one will do everything you need.

The beauty of PleXBMC though, is you can have both installed without them effecting each other so you can see which you like. (Sorry to get off topic bobintb) Sure. In order to use PleXBMC you really need to use one of the skins compatible with it for best results. If you look at the skins that are offered I didn't really like any of them. In order to watch your movies and tv shows you need to go through the Plex Add-On (in Video Add-On's) while you can make a shortcut (depending on the skin) I found it very annoying to have to do extra clicks to get to my media. I also found that not all of the views that I normally used were supported with the Plex Add-On. Lastly I had a lot of trouble with getting all of my covers displaying correctly after Plex had gone through and re-scraped everything. I know that there is the add on for plex to use locally stored media but I thought it was silly to go through extra trouble to have it so something I thought it should be doing in the first place. I may in the future try Plex again just for the mobile streaming and transcoding, but I don't know how well that would work trying to transcode a 15gb MKV or anime with subtitles on my older unraid box. On a side (main) note. Salud is really a life savor for my setup, I couldn't be happier with it!

Placing new or developing plugins in separate "beta" forums instead of one forum may help users understand the differences rather than going to one forum and say "wow look a new feature I can install" then crash their unRAID. Next step would be to develop a PlugIn Team since unRAID plugins are in abundance now and new plugins being developed as we speak.
September 25, 201312 yr Author yea, i think that's what is happening now. there's been discussion on the matter and apparently something is in the works. there are a lot of issues to work through. there just needs to be standards. if you meet those standards, you are "official", if not, you are "unofficial". then the user can decide from there. that's my opinion on the matter.

This is a better way to put it. Thanks for clearing that up. I suppose if one is using XBMC "client" exclusively and locally on one or more devices I can understand using SALUD. If one uses both "frontends" ex: XBMC client and Plex client (locally and remotely), then it would only make sense to use unRAID with Plex Media Server; in this case XBMC can either access unRAID media via SMB, UPnP, etc., depending on your preference. I think that the features offered by SALUD is something that people want to use regardless of which backend is installed.

On a side (main) note. Salud is really a life savor for my setup, I couldn't be happier with it! Those are the things I noticed off the start about PleXBMC, its an addon so it will function as one and not integrate fully unless using a modified skin. And I agree its missing a lot of views (again because its an addon) And I also am having trouble with getting my TV show posters to show up. Just wasn't sure if there was any more underlaying problems I hadn't come across yet since I have only really just played around with it. ATM I don't see enough reason to go with PleXBMC over XBMC + Mysql for local content. i don't think i'm quite getting my question across. plex is really 2 parts, the player as the frontend and the media server as the backend. with xbmc it would be xbmc as the frontend and mysql as the backend, minus all the transcoding and remote play features plex has (yea, i know the mysql part wouldn't really be considered the backend but this is for illustration purposes). i understand that due to personal preference some people like to use the plex media server backend with xbmc frontend and in that sense you can "use both" but that's not what i am referring to. as far as unraid goes, there is no xbmc or plex frontend. there is the plex media server, and the xbmc headless with mysql which is just the database managing part, the equivalent to plex media server, both the backends. in this sense, why use both? i use xbmc+sql backend because i don't need all the extra stuff plex media server does. if i did, i would use plex media server as the backend and xbmc as the frontend because i prefer the xbmc player over plex. i just don't see the point of having 2 backends to your system when just running one will do everything you need. I use XBMC + Mysql + salud for local content, due to having 3 clients. I use PMS so I can use plex app on my phone remotely (transcoding) or on a web browser at work/friends etc (transcoding due to bandwidth limitations) and I have PleXBMC installed at friends/family on their XBMC so I/they can access all my content remotely (transcoded or not depend on the situation) from within XBMC. Hence my need for both "back ends" and now the reason I have to look into upgrading my single core celeron to something that can handle transcoding. There is work being done on XBMC to improve upnp and add transcoding so in the future this setup might change.
September 26, 201312 yr Seems to be working well for me, agree that it would be nice to have notifications on the front end in the lounge but it's great otherwise, other thing I thought of is whether there is a way to trigger a library update every twenty four hours or so to pick up anything I've added manually. Really appreciate all the hard work, fantastic job! Thank you so much. the newer compile does have a new switch that disables some additional things and i just read in the xbmc forum that the notifications are working for someone at least. i was really just making an assumption as i havent teseted it with the new version. if you give it a try, let me know what happens. if not, it may be fixed one day but that would require either a change in sickbeard or another modification in xbmc headless where it would ignore the notification and im not going to attempt those. as for triggering the library, if everything is fine with this version i will start adding features. for now i just wanted a stable code base. that will include a few buttons on the plugin page to update and clean the libraries as well as looking into using add-ons. obviously not all of them will work but this for example: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Add-on:XBMC_Library_Auto_Update should have no or few compatibility issues. with the current state of the plugin, installing it manually would just entail copying it over to the right directory. probably i will just add a simple line of code to copy all the addons stored in a config directory over to xbmc. the hard part really would just be figuring out which ones work without a gui. I wanted to try this out. I configured the XBMC Library Auto Update on another box and was just going to to copy it to the salud folder but which addons folder should the files be dropped into as there are a few locations. I could just wait for your implementation of a cron job but I figured I would play around a bit. Main reason is because my movies aren't updating anymore and I so I don't have to remember to do a clean every once in a while. EDIT: I dropped the addon folder into: /plugins/xbmcsalud/addons/xbmclibraryautoupdate-master and the config was auto created in: /plugins/data/xbmcsalud/portable_data/userdata/addon_data/service.libraryautoupdate/settings.xml Which I overwrote with my setting.xml from my other box. In reality the setting could probably be edited directly in the setting.xml as they are pretty straight forward. Checked/modified the file owner and permissions. Logs show xbmc salud saw the addon/service and started it. I'll see how it runs tonight.
September 26, 201312 yr that's possible plex could be interfering but not likely since the plugins are installed in alphabetical order. it's still worth trying to disable plex and see if it works. also, why use plex and xbmc? Wow, lots of responses when you asked me this...ok so here's my angle... 1. I don't have your plugin or mysql implemented successfully for xbmc backend. 2. Plex is not as cumbersome to get rolling and is the cats meow for remote access especially with a 4 year old on the ipad in the back seat. I really only use plex for ios and PC remote functionality, but not plexbmc yet. I also thought it might get so polished and easy one day that I might simply want to go back to it for my movie frontend of choice. 3. I was using Plex since 2009, before getting into xbmc which is a newer frontend in my home. Im still getting comfortable with XBMC and mainly got into it initially due to Raspberry pi support. XBMC is now my media center frontend of choice for movies, TV files, etc... but It is not my main media center frontend...I still use Win7 Media center due to unparalleled cable card support as I have a HDhomerun Prime. So /usr/local/share/xmbc should match the directory that's set as the data directory. I think it was
September 26, 201312 yr I was re-reading the thread from the beginning and saw where someone had a problem with advancedsettings.xml and sources.xml not being created in /usr/local/share/xxx so I checked and sure enough I didn;t have them either. EDIT:Holy Smokes....FINALLY. Its always a silly oversight. I had the install left as the plugin default that is populated as above...once I changed to /usr/local/share/xbmc and restarted an much richer install seemed to take place in the log and I now have gui!! Why doe sthe plugin autopopulate /usr/local/lib/xmbc when that seemed to be the error for me all along? I didnt see anyone else stumble on that...ok Thanks.

Well I changed the plugin install field to /usr/local/share/xmbc and thats when gui came alive...let me see if I can scan now... ehhh, scan doesnt seem to be working yet, I may still be off track. log shows repeated request from webpage also to get mediaplayer or something...should I do the library update from the webpage or the plugin page? edit: ok so I reread your suggestion and deleted my data directory also after copying the directory above also...had to recreate language to get it restarted again...going to have to pick it up tomorrow...no go
September 26, 201312 yr I managed to get everything working. SALUD scans my shares on startup and sickbeard is able to send notifications and update the library. I'm however not so much satisfied with how SALUD is scraping the info. For TV shows, the year and plot are missing. Perhaps the scrapers need updating? Or should I modify some settings?

I haven't had any issues or heard of any. It should scrape just the same as XBMC. None of that code is changed.
September 26, 201312 yr Author ok, i get the whole "why use both" thing now. i was just curious but it makes sense now. i just havent ever used plexbmc and only used plex media server to set it up on my sister's roku. i may give it a try one of these days. the remote play thing was never something i needed but it might be fun to play with. also, that post did create quite a surprising number of responses.
September 26, 201312 yr I was re-reading the thread from the beginning and saw where someone had a problem with advancedsettings.xml and sources.xml not being created in /usr/local/share/xxx so I checked and sure enough I didn;t have them either. I manually copied and restarted, they are still there but no joy yet... wait, should my install directory on the plugin page be /usr/local/share/xbmc....or the default that was there usr/local/lib/xxx? Sorry it is usr/local/lib. But where it says data directory initially is coped from /usr/local/share/xbmc. The /usr/local/share/xbmc should have all of the language info, as well as all of the rest of the files needed. Are you sure you copied the whole xbmc folder into where your data directory path? Just as an example, in the plugin page I have my data directory as /mnt/cache/appdata/xbmc. I stopped the plugin and did the following rm -rf /mnt/cache/appdata/xbmc cp -R /usr/local/share/xbmc /mnt/cache/appdata/ then started it again Obviously it would be different depending on where you put your data directory. If that's not working you many need to remove and start all over again unless bobbintb has some suggestions.
