Samsung TV, Plex app, unraid Plex server [SOLVED]

Featured Replies

Hello folks,

just wondering if anyone has had luck getting the Samsung app Plex to work with unRaid Plex server.

I'm on

unRaid 5.0-rc12a

plex server v0.9.7.22.511

I can browse tv shows, but when I go to play something, it times out then disconnects.

thanks!

Samsung Plex app, settings > player > Transcode quality. You choose 1-12, 12 being the highest. I started changing this number and found that it started working. 12 didn't work "Couldn't connect to PMS", 5 looked like VHS, and 9 seems to be happy. 10 was a bit freezy. I also checked "Force local transcode" but I'm not sure if that's essential to it working or not.

Too bad there wasn't a better error message other than "Can't connect to PMS."

I use all of the above and have no problems whatsoever.  unRAID 5.0rc12a running PMS v0.9.7.22.511 and a 2012 Samsung UN55ES6150 running the Smart Hub Plex app.  No issues, has been working flawlessly since the app was first released (last November I think?).

How do you have everything setup?  I have everything hard-wired to a gigabit switch.  I have also run the TV on WiFi in the past and it worked that way as well.

hi dkerlee,

I've got the same setup, but I'm using a Samsung BR player with the plex app installed.  It's running off wifi, and the first time I installed the plex app on the BR player it was so slow, and wouldn't play anything and kept locking  up.  I removed it, redownloaded it and reinstalled it, and now it works fine.

I usually use medialink on the LGTV but for some reason it doesn't play a few MP4 files, comes up with an error, but the Samsung Plex app plays them perfectly.  I just wish it was a bit more responsive.  That's not the fault of the plex app though, the whole Samsung unit is slow as.

That sounds a little bit like what happening to me. I tried reinstalling the Plex app on the Samsung tv (UN32EHxxx) but same stuff. I can browse all my stuff, but when I go to play it, the app reports "cannot connect to Plex server." It lets me try one or two more times, then the server disappears entirely from the menu so I can only Configure or Quit. When I restart the app on the TV, I can browse all directories again.

The DLNA is a no go as well.

Played around with it and I stumbled onto the settings that "fixed" it. I'm on wifi to my plex server. From the Samsung Plex app, settings > player > Force local transcode, and started dicking with the numbers. 12 didn't work "Couldn't connect to PMS", 5 looked like VHS, and 9 seems to be happy. 10 was a bit freezy. Now I'm good. Too bad there wasn't a better error message other than "Can't connect to PMS."

I don't have to transcode at all as far as I know.  It's certainly not forced too.  Have you tried rebooting your server?

Also how far is your TV from your Wifi router?  I prefer a wired connection, but the LGTV is hogging the only cable.

Did you turn on DLNA?  It's in settings.  I can't remember if it's on my default or not.

The router is a Buffalo AirStation HighPower N450 Gigabit Wireless Router - WZR-HP-G450H, wifi N router.

It's located upstairs, the Samsung TV is right under it through the floor. It's got full bars there.

I have not tried rebooting the server, but I did restart Plex.

I would also prefer a wired connection, but I don't want to drill through any walls (yet). I may go with power line networking (ZyXEL 500 MB/s ethernet power plug adapters). Plenty fast enough for a 5GB 2 hour video.

I did turn on DLNA - but the Plex app on the tv doesn't go through that. If I use a different app, ... All Share or something. It's a default app on the tv that will connect to DLNA services, but of course, the Plex DLNA services aren't all that great. I times out when I browse around and go to get any actual directory listing of AVIs.

But, it's working now, so I'm good!
