Unable to move files to/ from server

Featured Replies

Hi,

For some unknown reason (to me) I cannot move files to or from the tower server to another computer on the network.

I can access the tower and watch the movies etc but can't physically move them.

The move starts but after 20 secs or so i get the message ' file can not be accessed'.

System log attached.

Cheers

What unRAID user logins are being used for the various operations?

  • Author

i am just logging in to the tower with the root password. No special user passwords.

User root is not permitted share access. root is only used for telnet and console access. What user are you using for share access?

I have added the same user details to the unRaid server, that I use to log into the main pc accessing the array.

From what I have read, this is required for the array to allow sharing of files.

I cannot see, however, the new user log on within the user tab on the tower gui, only the 'root' is listed as a user option.

Are you saying that you used the unRAID GUI to add the users and then they disappeared or did you add the users some other way?

user names must be entered in "lower case" only.  There is no warning or error message if mixed case or upper case is used, however the user is not added.

I read that it must be in lower case. I attached the last bit of the system log to the previous post. I first tried to add user with a capital, as per the log. It seems it was rejected but now I can't seem to add a new user, log is inactive!

What do you mean by "log is inactive"?

What happens when you add the user "logan"? (All lower case.)

Ok, I have added a new user to the tower, same user and password as the pc log on.

This seems to have made no difference.

Do I need to log into the tower with the new user instead of the root password?

Do you mean a new user in all lower case? Does the new user appear correctly in the user list?

Root is NOT allowed share access. Another login MUST be used for share access.

Ok, so I need to log on with the new user. I'm running the tower headless. I have a putty telnet program to interact. When I try to log in with the new login using putty, I can enter the login but not the password.

Is there another thing I need to do?

I'm sorry for sounding like a Noob, but this really is new territory for me  :-\

1. ONLY root is able to login via telnet. No other user can login via telnet.

2. Root is NOT allowed share access. Any other user can access shares.

Ok, so how do I log in as another user other than root??

ONLY root can use telnet. root is NOT allowed share access. To access a share, specify a user other than root when connecting to the share. To telnet, enter root as the user. You may need to clear any cached credentials in the Windows control panel.

Alright, I get that I can't share stuff when signed in as root user. How do I sign in as another user? I have logan_officer as a user account, where do I sign in with this?

When you connect to the server shares from a client, e.g., a PC or Mac, you specify the desired login.

I have the shares set to secure and logan_officer as the user, read/write permission set. Now I am denied access to the folder as I don't have 'permission from tower' to access it.

I'm getting confused.

When I start up the tower server, I don't log on specifically. It just shows up as a networked drive, on my windows pc, and away I go.

Where do I specifically log on?

You are logging on to the share as anonymous, and since you have the share set to secure, you need to log in as logan_officer.

Ok, but how???

I can't see anywhere to log on.

Thanks, great post.

after reading that I discovered that by renaming the login account on the windows pc, nothing behind the scenes actually changes.

I have now gone through the process of changing the 'user' folder to the new login that unRaid should recognise.

Still I cannot move things around. It seems I don't have permission to access the folders. 'destination access denied' or my personal favourite 'you require permission from Tower\nobody to make changes to this file'

At this rate, unRaid may have a short life expectancy on my system :(

I have attached a snip of one of the shares in case this helps.

From Window Command Prompt, try

net use * /delete

Ok, tried that.

Had the response ' there are no entries in the list'

Alright, it seems that by making the shares all public again, along with the new log in from the PC, the problem has been resolved.

Still not sure why the shares can't be private but I can live with that for now.

That's to all for the help.
