Unable to access SMB shares

Featured Replies

After upgrading to latest build I am unable to access my shares from any Windows PC.

SMB is enabled for WORKGROUP and my Windows PC is in the same workgroup but I can't seem to browse any shares..

It doesn't matter if I browse to \\servername or \\server-ip or \\servername\sharename - same result = Network name not found. It is not a DNS problem as the IP resolves just fine. I am also able to manage the server and browse the shares using the web interface.

Any ideas appreciated. Syslog attached if it can be of any help

Thank you

Unfortunately, Windows does not use the DNS server on your router.  SMB uses a 'Local Master' to resolve all names and it only polls the network occasionally to determine what computers are actually using SMB.  (The whole thing is quite convoluted.)  Normally everything works fine but when it doesn't, it can be a real bear to resolve.

First thing to so is to allow your unRIAD server to become the Local Master.  You do this by going to 'Settings', 'SMB and changing the "Local master:" Setting to 'Yes'.

Now shutdown EVERY Windows computer and any other media devices on your network that accesses data via SMB.  (Do NOT turn off your unRAID server!!!  We are attempting to force it to become the Local Master!)  Leave them turned off for at least a half hour.  Start up each computer one at a time and allow it to fully boot before starting the next one.  Hopefully this will solve the problem.

If not leave everything running for an hour and see if everything resolves itself.

Changing to master didn't do the trick. Any other input welcome. It's sad to have a lot of data which I'm unable to access...

From which version of unRAID did you upgrade from?  Are you trying to login?  Do you  have or have you ever had any Windows networking logins to any other servers or networks?  (I am not asking about Internet type logins!) What error messages are you getting on your Windows computers?

Did you run the 'New Permissions' script under the 'Utils' tab of the GUI?

- I upgraded from 5.0 Beta6

- Trying to log in? I'm not prompted for username/password. Never has been

- I have logged onto several other networks/computers previously - including this server before the upgrade...

- I just tried to run the 'New permissions' script - still no luck :(
