Constant problems with AFP and Time Machine

Featured Replies

I've just purchased a HP N54L microserver and fitted a pair of 2TB WD green drives (as well as leaving the 250GB it came with in). I'm using the latest RC12a build, no plugins.

All I've been trying to do is first of all set up unRAID with an AFP share for Time Machine backups.

I've created a new share, specified AFP export as Time Machine, given it a 1TB limit and tried both public or private access with a user/pass.

I then access the server, open Time Machine's preferences and specify the server share as a backup destination. It's able to create the sparse image but that's it. After 10 minutes, it reports there's been an error saving the image file and states error code -1.

Additionally, once the Time Machine problems occur, I can't then reach the server via the web interface or connect to it via AFP, it just hangs at connecting.

Any ideas? I've followed various threads where people have been able to set it up but for me, unRAID seems to just not work as I expect.

Mac is running 10.8.3, unRAID rc12a installed on a HP N54L with 2GB of RAM. No plugins or additional changes, no data on the drive at all.

If memory serves, people have had success with Time Machine if they limit the share to only one drive.

This seems to be the fix to get it to work for the time being.

Despite using all manners of permissions, specifying the drive to store the TM backups on, it seemed file access in general was a complete nightmare.

My unRAID setup until recently had comprised of 2x 2TB WD Green drives, one as parity and one as data. I also had a 1x 250GB drive that came with the server which I didn't allocate to use.

Different USB sticks, multiple reformats and trying over and over again would result in extremely poor performance...

Until I added a 3rd 2TB WD Green drive. Once I did that, everything works perfectly.

Alex! Well I got my unRAID install working. Not sure why adding a 3rd matching drive helped but seemed to resolve all the issues I had, just about completed my first TM backup
