landS
Moved Progression to http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=5133.360 reply #368 Sigh... the video out from my 2011 BIOSTAR TA785GE 128M just died while running the first preclear cycle on my 4 new 4TB drives - at least the first round came out looking good on the drives (I believe). Original post on this thread: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=27380 Given that this board has been rma's 3 times in the past (all for video issues), and that it is now way out of warranty, I really do NOT want another budget board. I am now seeking a low power, reliable, cool running board + CPU + ram. I would rather have a high quality motherboard with a less expensive (dual thread or better) cpu for now as I can upgrade the cpu down the line if needed. Budget can be flexible, though I would LIKE to stay below $400. It should have onboard NIC, a minimum of 5 SATA, and at least 1 pci-e for the SASLP. It should also have an onboard GPU out (HDMI/DVI/VGA in that order preference). As of now, the machine will be left on 24x7 for XBMC (dvd iso, bluray iso, high-bit rate music, pictures, xbmc mysql) use - with up to 3 outgoing Raspbmc outs and 1 Win7 Encoding machine In. I am not concerned about virtualization. Recommendations are quickly sought! The only recycled component is my SASLP - and I would rather use onboard SATA to minimize power consumption and heat. landS
I guess my first go would be: $200 MBD-X9SCM-F-O http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182253&Tpk=supermicro%20x9scm-f $ 70 G620 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116399 $ 85 Kingston 8GB ECC Unbuffered DDR3 1333 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139262 1 - this gives me my least preferred video out (I need to hook up a dedicated monitor rather than using the HDMI line wired to my HDTV)... that is if unraid even recognizes the Nuvoton WPCM450RA0BX video chipset 2 - this uses a fairly warm/power hungry cpu (65w) Any 'better' suggestions? Will this be powerful enough to run parity checks on massive media collections IPMI - I really do not understand this one. Quote Link to comment
mrow
That board is overkill for what you plan to use it for unless you plan to virtualize everything in the future. I'd go for this setup: CPU: Core i3-3220: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116775 Mobo: ASRock B75M R2.0: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157356 RAM: Wintec 8GB kit: www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820161452 Total is $238.50 shipped with $20 off coupon code for the CPU that ends tomorrow. $258.50 without the coupon code. CPU is more than powerful enough for your needs and runs cool/low power consumption. Motherboard has 8 onboard SATA ports and two 16x PCIe slots (one runs at 4x) if you ever need controller cards as you add more drives. Quote Link to comment
landS
Mrow – I am a little leery of that ASRock – only because I do not see many using it on the forums. What about going with one of Tom’s AVS-10/4 spec’d machines? In theory this should give me the best compatibility with the software, no? Keep in mind, I do have a Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 controller if needed. $340 $260 Supermicro X7SPA-HF-D525 (or equivalent) http://www.amazon.com/Supermicro-X7SPA-HF-D525-O-X7SPA-HF-D525-Motherboard/dp/B004OBYWFU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1370524257&sr=8-1&keywords=X7SPA-HF-D525 This board would force me to use the VGA to a dedicated monitor (but it also has IPMI, I that can be accessed from my Windows 7 Machine) $80 MEM-DR320L-CL02-SO13 4GB DDR-3/1333 DRAM http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=MEM- DR320L-CL02-SO13&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3AMEM-DR320L-CL02-SO13 -This is just a little bit more than the asrock recommendation -Will the dual 1.8 GHz core be enough for large array sized parity checks? will it be enough for multiple user access at the same time? -My Fractal Design R4 case can accommodate ITX. Supermicro lists this board as Mini-ITX. Is this the same thing? $600 $185 Supermicro X9SCM-F (or equivalent) http://www.amazon.com/SUPERMICRO-MBD-X9SCM-F-O-Intel-Server-Motherboard/dp/B004WKRDA4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1370524296&sr=8-1&keywords=X9SCM-F $130 Intel Core i3-3220T http://www.amazon.com/Intel-i3-3220T-Dual-Core-Processor-Cache/dp/B0093H8JCM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1370524317&sr=8-1&keywords=i3-3220T $280 16GB DDR3/1333 ECC DRAM standard http://www.amazon.com/Supermicro-Certified-MEM-DR380L-SL02-EU13-Samsung-Memory/dp/B00A74PESW/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1370525325&sr=1-1&keywords=MEM-DR380L-SL02-EU13 -Other than being $260 more than the atom option, upping the ram 4 times, and giving me an extra 1 Ghz/core... will this be a worthy upgrade for media streaming? It really is a good deal over what I would like to spend. -The memory is ECC... does this even make a difference on modern hardware? Quote Link to comment
