June 9, 201313 yr Hi all, Just bought a new 3TB WD Red drive which is connected via my Supermicro SASLP card. Here are the results. (first preclear of 10 passes failed after 8 due to a power cut). in total 7 passes have been completed. I'm pretty sure these results are a good thing but would like an experienced eye to confirm this for me! June 9, 201313 yr Author Looks fine to me. Why did you do 10 passes !!?? (3 seems like PLENTY to me) 10 passes just for the sheer hell of it. Wanted to 100% sure on the drive as its packing from amazon was a little weedy. Will be moving a lot of data around tonight now!
June 9, 201313 yr 10 passes just for the sheer hell of it. Wanted to 100% sure on the drive as its packing from amazon was a little weedy. Will be moving a lot of data around tonight now! ... as good a reason as any (I assumed as much) => and if you've got the time, it certainly doesn't hurt anything.
June 18, 201313 yr Author UPDATE: Drive failed last night. Red balled. It did drop out completely as if the power had been cut from this drive. I've contacted Amazon for a refund which they've issued and a new drive has just been delivered (same model). I think 10 passes are a little over the top but now having experienced my first red ball Id consider making it my new minimum. Don't know though as with a 3tb drive that equated to about 11 days!
June 18, 201313 yr 11 days beating the hell out of a desktop (home NAS) drive is a bit much. red balled could have been caused by almost anything other than the drive its self. Bad power. Lose connection. Bad memory. Etc. Sent from my SGH-I727R using Tapatalk 2
June 18, 201313 yr Author Im pointing my finger at the drive so quickly because everything else in my system is fine. That's the only thing that's changed. Same power plug as old drive, same data cable as old drive. Find it unlikely that anything else other than drive is at fault so soon after purchase? My new one just arrived and upon checking the warranty of the drive the WD website says "out of region". Should I worry about this as the warranty coverage dates are all correct? Ie 3 years.

If you go to WD's warranty check website and put in the S/N of the drive, that is the "authority" as to what they will cover. The exception is that if you purchased the drive later than they assume for a shelf life, they'll extend it to match the full warranty length. But if it's showing the drive isn't covered, then yes, I'd be concerned.

June 19, 201313 yr Author Ordered my 3rd drive from Lambdatek. Cheaper than anyone else by a few £££. Will report back on packing quality and such.
June 19, 201313 yr man i guess i throw danger into the wind.. i only pre-clear once and if all is good i ended up using it. i've got a wd 2tb red that i've been using for 1-2 months now.. so far so good
June 20, 201313 yr man i guess i throw danger into the wind.. i only pre-clear once and if all is good i ended up using it. i've got a wd 2tb red that i've been using for 1-2 months now.. so far so good I don't think many do ten cycles I connect my new drives to a PC; run WD's quick test; then extended test; then write zeroes; then repeat the previous two tests (this takes ~ a day); then I run 2 cycles of pre-Clear. If I get ANY errors at any point, I return the drive. Otherwise, it goes into the system. I've had quite a few Green drives that I had to RMA as a result of this process; so far (knock-on-wood) I've had zero failures with Red drives.
June 21, 201313 yr Author Drive arrived from Lambdatek yesterday. Its DOA. INTENSELY frustrating chain of events so far. So out of my 3 Reds ive received 2 have gone faulty. The other I didn't even power up. Not filling me with confidence so far despite my previous good experiences with the reds. Bring back Hitachi!
June 21, 201313 yr wow, i was actually thinking about getting a few 3tb red at end of month, but seeing the luck your having with them it may pay to leave it a little lol.
June 21, 201313 yr Author My 4th drive has just been despatched from Scan. Lambdateks service was a joke. 7 days to authorise the RMA then they *might* send a replacement if it gets approved. Next day (sat) delivery from scan.co.UK £5.20. Update: item has gone from order at 12.21 to picked and dispatched at 12.29. Literally amazing.
June 21, 201313 yr Do like scan.co.uk one of my most used sites, never had any issues with them, and returns are easy as pie to do with them also.
June 21, 201313 yr Drive arrived from Lambdatek yesterday. Its DOA. INTENSELY frustrating chain of events so far. So out of my 3 Reds ive received 2 have gone faulty. The other I didn't even power up. Not filling me with confidence so far despite my previous good experiences with the reds. Bring back Hitachi! I'll bet someone at Lambdatek dropped the ball on this one. No, literally. With this many failures from one distributor, chances are the entire box or pallet got dropped or otherwise seriously mishandled in shipping. It may not be their fault, it could be the shippers fault, but in any case, I'd steer clear of drives from them for a couple months.
June 21, 201313 yr That is a very disturbing sequence of events. Definitely not a good sign for WD Red reliability. I wonder if they've had a bad "run" at one of their manufacturing facilities. My experience has been exactly the opposite -- I've bought ~ 15, and they've all been perfect. A refreshing change from my experience with the Green series drives, where I've had about a 20% failure rate over ~ 50 purchases.
June 21, 201313 yr Author I should point out that drive 1 was Amazon direct, drive 2 Amazon fulfilled and was out of region so returned, drive 3 from lambdatek. Its not fair to paint any one distributer in this case. 2 out of 2 drives that have made it to powering up have failed within 3 weeks or 3 seconds. What I can say about lambdatek is that the customer service for returns is shocking. I will never use them again for this reason - hung up on 4 separate occasions because the guy didn't like.I was upset that the RMA would take 7 days (no s##t I'm upset on a new drive after my history!!). Ugh I've just got to hope 4th time is the charm.
June 21, 201313 yr "... just got to hope 4th time is the charm. " ==> Wow ... sure hope so. Of course you should never get to a "4th time" !! One thing I definitely give Newegg credit for is they have superb customer service ... whenever I've had a drive that didn't pass all my tests, it's a "no questions asked" process to replace it. I DO, however, always return it for a refund and order a replacement (they'll waive the restock as long as you've ordered a replacement) ... as if you return it for replacement they won't cross-ship -- you have to wait until they receive it before they send the replacement.
June 23, 201313 yr http://www.amazon.co.uk/review/R3823WJIZYJZOK/ref=cm_cr_pr_perm/?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B008JJLZ7G&linkCode=&nodeID=&tag= f**k so will be returning that then. god what a pain in the arse RMAing is. Did you select the correct country? My REDs all show in limited warranty. But had to select Netherlands in my case.
June 28, 201313 yr Author Touchwood we are all set. 5 preclear cycles all completed without a hitch. Completing the data rebuild now at a tasty 114mb/s. All done by the time I wake up in the morning. Hurrah.
