WIKI: Hardware section for TV Tuner cards?

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I believe it would be helpful for people who want to have a TVHeadEnd server on their unRAID server, if in the WIKI there was a section on compatible TV tuner cards.

Currently you have to pick up the bits and pieces fro the forum, and it is not necessarly conclusive.

Just my cents,

JC

  umm...

It may be nice to have such cards in a multi-function server.  unRAID is a file server though, and yes it is used by many (if not most) of us for media server purposes... but...

Though what you ask for may seem nice to have in a WIKI, etc.  It does not actually have anything to do unRAID.  As a result, there actually would not be any compatibility lists or incompatibility concerns.  The cards just do not work with unRAID...  unRAID does not have any support for such devices.

To use such devices on a computer server that is running unRAID, you would also need to run other software, that is where the compatibility list and questions would need to be asked and sought after.  Such software would either be run as an additional package run under the Linux environment of unRAID, or in a virtual environment, such as under ESXi.

  For a better chance of answers to your questions, look at these other forums;

Sorry, but even though it is a Hardware question, it is more properly asked under either one of those two specialized forums due to reasons stated above.

Hope that will help you find the answers you are looking for!  :-)  Sounds very interesting!  best wishes!

Well I will be using it with TVHeadEnd. Maybe I misunderstand something, but wouldn't you not only need TVHeadEnd to support the tuner card, but also some support in the kernel?

I put this issue here because I needed to know if the cards I am looking into have the kernel support.

Yes you need kernel drivers for your hardware, of course.

AFAIU stock unRAID does not cater for this....look here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=20782.0

As pointed out in there, you need extra modules, which is discussed (and provided) in that thread.

Also from my experience, with a more complex setup (like DVB-S2 and a motor-driven dish) - you need some extra capabilities that are non-standard in their implementation '(i.e. diseqc support)

and you need to verify that the application and the hardware will work together (find a live/working reference).
