June 12, 201313 yr I was getting close to pulling the trigger on some new hardware but now I've started to read that Sandy Bridge is better with the X9SCM and ESXi? Essentially, if I add 1 M1015 to the X9SCM-F with an Ivy Bridge CPU I'll be fine. I think I may even be OK with 2 M1015's. But if I add a third, or even add another card to the 4th PCIe slot they won't work. Is that still true? Has there been an update to the firmare or the ESXi software that corrects that?
June 12, 201313 yr Author If you are going with and ESXi build go with the X9SCM-iiF board. If I remember correctly, one of the two NIC's on that board don't work with ESXi?
June 12, 201313 yr If you are going with and ESXi build go with the X9SCM-iiF board. If I remember correctly, one of the two NIC's on that board don't work with ESXi? Nope, you have it backwards. The X9SCM-F-O is the one that has a NIC that does not work by default in ESXi. Both NIC's on the X9SCM-iiF work without issue in ESXi.

Awesome... so the people that were having Ivy Bridge issues must have been using the X9SCM-F-0. Thanks for pointing this out.

Awesome... so the people that were having Ivy Bridge issues must have been using the X9SCM-F-0. Thanks for pointing this out. You may be refering to me. I have Ivy Bridge problems but the MB doesn't matter I was haveing them with any Ivy Bridge compatible board I used. HOWEVER it was only with a specific TV Tuner card I am using. All OTHER cards appear to work fine with Ivy Bridge. Now the story changes a little when you go to multiple cards of the same type. 3 M1015s would cause problems when passed through to the SAME VM but would otherwise work fine bare metal or passed to separate VMs.
June 28, 201313 yr The only issue left with the X9SCM is the second network not being recognised by ESXi out of the box. If you use bios ver 2.0b and a E3 V2 cpu there are no pass-through issues with 3 M1015's. Issue seems to be with bios 2.0.

That's what I was having problems with on my X9SCM-F with 2.0a. If that works I will believe you that the only issue left is the network. The Duet is PCIe 1.0 and very picky. The IVY bios's need to be updated to handle that correctly. Intel has updated the bios on the DH77EB MB so that a Duet works so I know it is possible. My X9SCM-F is not in use but I don't have a spare CPU to test with.
June 28, 201313 yr I would test but I do not have the tuner card in question. I just know that it would seem that 2.0b fixed the issues with the m1015 passthorugh (I supposed I could flash back to 2.0 to confirm) I was alos sent a link to a 2.0c bios version from supermicro (when I asked why it wasn't on the web they said it was still beta) I also got a hold of the release notes for the differen bios I could not see anything specific that would account for the problems being fixed. June 28, 201313 yr Author Just to be clear... you guys are referring to the X9SCM-F model right? I ended up buying the X9SCM-iif and the bios is currently on version 2.0a (at least that's what Super Micro has on their website).
June 28, 201313 yr I am referring to the X9SCM-F Given the two boards are the same chipset it to may have the pass-through issue with an E3 v2 cpu I have not seen anyone test it.
June 28, 201313 yr I would test but I do not have the tuner card in question. Wasn't trying to suggest that you need to test it. Just making a point that it may still have the odd problem or two but they should be limited in nature (I.E. to a specific card - stay away from that card and it should function fine). I found that even Tyan had the same problem with an IVY compatible bios and the Duet card on the S5512GM4NR MB (similar chipset to the X9SCM). I had to downgrade the S5512GM4NR to Sandy only bios to make the Duet work.
June 28, 201313 yr It's all good I didn't think you were insisting that at all I was just saying that I didn't have the card if I did I would have slapped it in there an tried it out already. I took a gamble on the v2 cpu's and this board when other people were having issues, I am just now letting people know that a bios update for the board appears to have resolved some of the issues at least with the m1015's and now gives people a bit more choice
