June 12, 201313 yr I've had some external drives connected over USB3 ports for utility purposes i.e. Plex, SAB, SickBeard, PVR recording space. I don't use a cache drive and didn't want to take up another slot with a non array drive. Although working with no issues for probably 90-95% of the time USB3 will on occasion crap out and dmesg reports some related interface errors. Usually recoverable sometimes requiring a reboot. I've attributed this to either Linux USB3 support or more likely my mobo implementation. As such I decided to try an old Thermaltake ST0014U 2 port dock i had laying around with eSATA. I picked up this PCIe card to get an eSATA port since I didn't already have one. http://www.vantecusa.com/en/product/view_detail/499 My goal was to put 2 drives on the dock and hope that I could read/write to both over 1 eSATA connection with reasonable performance. If anyone is remotely interested in some very non scientific testing and results let me know. Bottom line is that after some settling of dmesg output it does work.
