June 18, 201313 yr I had a drive fail today and replaced it. I noticed when I brought the array back online, the shares were available while it is rebuilding. Is it ok to use the array while it is rebuilding? Thanks.
June 18, 201313 yr Yes, you can use the array while it is rebuilding. That's part of the design. I would suggest you not write a lot to the array during the rebuild, as this will slow things down. Plus it always makes me a little nervous.
June 18, 201313 yr You can use the array while it's doing a rebuild, just as you can use the array during parity checks. HOWEVER, consider what's happening during those operations, and you'll realize that any additional I/O will cause significant disk thrashing on those disks involved in the other I/O. So it will very significantly slow down the rebuild/parity check, and will also be slower at the other operation(s) as well. Bottom line: Except for perhaps "showing off" the ability to do it, I NEVER do anything with the array while running parity checks or during disk rebuilds. I HAVE, on occasion, streamed a couple of movies from a "non-existent" disk (i.e. one that's missing from the array) just to show off the ability to do it.
