June 20, 201313 yr Great Prices!!! <rant>This has always irritated me. More electronics (enclosure), identical drive, and the external one is 20$ cheaper. Where is the sense in that??</rant>
June 20, 201313 yr Higher prices of internal HDDs at retail are an attempt to thwart smaller OEMs and system builders from getting a lower price that way then going thru the traditional channels where they have to commit to buying in bulk and at fixed contract prices. While those contract prices may generally be lower then retail, when HDD mfgs have their quarterly fire sale to bring up their sales numbers, those retail prices may be lower then the long term contract prices.
June 20, 201313 yr Author must... re... sist... .....ugh..... I hear you. There is just no way for me to justify it to myself. I've got 6TB free in my array plus I've got one of these 4TB precleared and ready to go and a 3TB that just came back from RMA preclearing right now so I've got 13TB of free space sitting around right now. However, these 4TB Seagates are so fast and run so cool it makes me want to replace all my array disks with them.
June 20, 201313 yr Same boat -- I've got almost 6TB free in my array and a spare 3TB WD Red on the shelf that I bought the last time they were on sale. I USED to buy quite a few spares ... but have long since learned that with constantly increasing capacities, you really don't want to do that => otherwise you'll have a bunch of 3TB spares when 5TB drives are shipping
June 20, 201313 yr Great thanks for the heads up, been waiting on one of these! Silly I need to break open the external enclosure... Once V5 goes final I will be upgrading from 4.7 and replacing my 2TB parity with a 4TB parity!
