Block hot swap bays for better airflow

Featured Replies

On a few threads I have read that on the Norco cases it is better for static pressure to block off unused hot swap bays. I would like to know how you guys block yours off? Does it help with overall airflow to keep everything cool? I have searched, but have not found anything.

Thanks,

The drive caddys have a slide to open/close the air flow.

Wow I have never realized that. Thanks for the information!

Well, at least one version did, but not the version I purchased. You can also use a sock (John's method).

For that part of the case, it is really about airflow direction, not pressure since the drives are in the negative pressure area of the fan wall. With the factory fans sized for all drive bays full, having the empty bays without blocking result in low airflow in the occupied bays.

Another big aid is to block the unused pass-thur areas of the fan wall to prevent air recirculating at the fan wall.

I plan on doing this also. Thanks.

...I am using "disk dummies" made from cut PUR foam blocks....they were made to order and cost around 30cents per piece.

That sounds awesome! If only a company in the states sold these, and esp for that cheap.

This is Polyurethane Foam...you use in upholstery for filling mattresses, chairs, pillows....I used PUR RG-50 which is quite compact and stiff.

There are lots of companies who sell it and even cut it for you into blocks/forms of desired dimensions.

I hardy can believe, that these kind of shops are not around in the US.

If you cannot find one, go ask a shop that repairs furniture, especially chairs, sofas where they get their supply.

If you find one, be aware that cutting this stuff into dimensions comes at a tolerance...even the most accurate machine has an allowance of +/- 5mm for each dimension/cut.

You do not need a block in full length of a real disk, of course...as long as width and height is OK it can be much shorter.

You can find stuff at the Bay...or here? http://www.efoamstore.com/shopcart2/default.asp?id=10

Electrical tape inside the trays over the vent holes.
