June 27, 201313 yr Hi, I am hoping I can get some tips as to how to get this all setup and running. First a little background on what I have... I have a i3 NUC that is my CQC Server which controls my audio equipment, lighting and sends commands to XBMC to play selected HD videos etc.. I have the following equipment: CQC Server: i3 NUC 3217U DC3217IYE Crucial MSATA 64GB SSD 4GB of Ram HTPC with Win 7 and XBMC (this will be gutted and become my NAS) I will be getting the following Friday: Media Server: i3 NUC 3217U DC3217IYE Crucial m4 64GB mSATA SSD 4GB 1600MHz PC3-12800 DDR3 Non-ECC Ram UnRaid NAS Server: ASRock LGA1155/Intel B75/DDR3/Quad CrossFireX/SATA3&USB3.0/A&V&GbE/MicroATX Motherboard B75 PRO3-M Seasonic SSR-450RM ATX 12V/EPS 12V 450-Watt 80 Plus Gold certified PFC Power Supply Intel Core i3-3220T Dual-Core Processor 2.8 Ghz 3MB Cache LGA 1155 - BX80637i33220T Samsung 840 Series 2.5 inch 120GB SATA III internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7TD120BW (for a boot drive) I will use my current Zalman HD160 case, 16GB RAM, (2) 1TB, and (1) 4TB HDDs. I will be using Unraid for the software. When I build the NAS... 1: Do I install UnRaid first and then MySQL Server on the NAS? 2: Does XBMC get installed on the Media Server and the NAS? 3: I want to be able to stream 1080p videos (most likely only one at a time but I have 2 HDHomerun dual tuners which could be recording up to 4 channels at a time). Will the Media Server be up to it? If I can also run XBMC on the NAS then I could up the ram to 32 GB and even go bigger on the video card if needed. Any foresight or tips would be greatly appreciated as I would like this to go as smoothly as possible.. tia, Ron
June 27, 201313 yr My setup: unraid server, mainly stock with nzb/sab addons 2 acer revo ions running openelec mysql is not needed on unraid each xbmc can have it own database, there is a watchdog addon you can install in the xbmc gui that will instantly update your xbmc library and soon as something is written to your unraid server. There is no need to install mysql (its going to be depreciated soon anyways) on your unraid for the xbmc library - they are eventually going upnp to talk to each other. Myk

Myk but um... does that not mean the XBMC machine has to be on all the time? If that is the case then it will not work for me... My XBMC box is off until I am ready to use it. Leaving it running 24/7 to get updates to its database via upnp is not my idea of the correct direction to go.
June 28, 201313 yr Yeah, it's a weird direction but there seems to be a parallel thread moving to SQLite. I love the fact I can turn on my pivos and know its got the latest media ready to view. I might try and move the thumbnails etc to the server and see what that is for performance.

For what it is worth, I just replaced my full blown HTPC with Raspbmc - it costs me less than $10 to run 24x7 for a year. Works great for music, dvd iso, and blu-ray iso (but you really want it on a small UPS). Note that it is less than stellar for some of the online streaming services (but my TV does these natively)
June 28, 201313 yr I have 4 different XBMC installs that connect to my unRAID machine. Windows in my Office Mac in my Office Linux in my living room Android OUYA in my Game room I've never once messed with SQL on unRAID. To me the only advantage is to have one central database for what? What you have watched? I have each system setup to "Auto update Library" new content when it turns on. Take takes me I'd guess 60 seconds scanning 1100 movies and I'd guess over 8000 Tv episodes. Normally I'm watching something while its scanning in the back ground. Worst case I turn on my system and be patient. lol I've really loved using cache_dir because my systems can rip thru their Library update without even spooling up unRAID. Of course if there is a change it spools up whatever drive is needed and grabs what it needs.

Would moving the thumbnails to a SSD on the Media Server speed things up?
June 29, 201313 yr central fanart is no longer officially supported in XBMC It works but it doesn't do what people think it does

Leaving it running 24/7 to get updates to its database via upnp is not my idea of the correct direction to go. If this is the case you could always use something like the headless XBMC plugin someone on here developed. Right now people are using it to update their MySQL libraries but I don't see why it couldn't be used to update other devices if UPNP does in fact become the new method of doing things.
June 29, 201313 yr Upon turning it on the watchdog plugin will have the database updated in min, it only updates what has been added. I have been running this for 6+ months this way - mysql for database is going to disappear any version now - why spend the time setting it up, only to have it not work that way in a short time from now.... The XBMC dev team is going uPNP - I assume upon startup as well, they will instant sync themselfs - but that is a assumption on my part. My current setup with using the watchdog plug - my database between my 2 units is never out of sync - only downfall to my method is I cant pause on one machine (ex living room) and pick up where I left off in the bed room etc.... Myk PSS - BTW - I dont shut mine off - I use the suspend function, and my units will see a keypress from the usb/remote and bring the unit back up of out suspend in about 5 secs - and then i see watchdog kick in and update - max 15 secs and I am ready to watch tv My setup: unraid server, mainly stock with nzb/sab addons 2 acer revo ions running openelec mysql is not needed on unraid each xbmc can have it own database, there is a watchdog addon you can install in the xbmc gui that will instantly update your xbmc library and soon as something is written to your unraid server.
