June 28, 201313 yr I go to user shares, click add volume, and populate all or none of the fields. I just see Restarting SMB but nothing appears in the list. What do I do so I can start using this? Also, can I add a hard drive that isn't apart of the unRAID volume? I'd like to add a 2TB drive I have laying around and use it for Time Machine backups, no redundancy. My current server, which I need to match exactly, is as follows: \\Server\Beryllium\Music \\Server\Beryllium\Pictures \\Server\Beryllium\Video Among other folders. I have to match this exactly so it works with my legacy server (file paths have to match). I really only want to create one share (Beryllium) and then I will create folders for the others. My split level is tricky because the depth of items in these folders ranges from 3-8 levels. Hopefully with high water there is rarely a split across a file (to another drive) and so I'll almost never see a delay while a drive spins up.
June 28, 201313 yr It sounds like you have it figured out. You need one "user-share" and the others can be sub-directories.

FYI - A file is never split between drives. Dependent upon Split Level, you could have related files on different drives. i.e. could have a mkv file on one drive and the related srt file on another drive
June 28, 201313 yr Author I'm not following. When I add a share, nothing happens. I don't see any shares in the list of shares, ever.

Are you clicking the Apply and then the Done buttons when entering the details in the GUI? Perhaps you can provide some screen shots to make it clearer what you are doing. Another thing to check that can cause problems is to if you have any errors on the USB stick. That can cause it to be mounted read-only which would stop changes being saved. You can check for that by plugging the USB drive into your PC/Mac and running a chkdsk on it to check for (and correct) errors.
June 28, 201313 yr Author I am using unRAID Server Pro v5.0-rc16 I only see the fields and then "Add Share" and "Cancel" buttons. When I click Add Share it just shows restarting SMB and nothing else happens.
June 28, 201313 yr Author I named it, put a description, put split level to 1, and the rest I read are optional or set by default.
June 28, 201313 yr After clicking the Add Share button to add a share, did you remember to press the Done button to commit the changes and return to the list of shares (which should now have an entry for the share you have just added).
June 28, 201313 yr can you attach your syslog? do you have anything in your syslog like Jun 28 17:29:56 Tower emhttp: shcmd (161): mkdir '/mnt/user/pmm2' Jun 28 17:29:56 Tower emhttp: shcmd (162): chmod 770 '/mnt/user/pmm2' Jun 28 17:29:56 Tower emhttp: shcmd (163): chown nobody:users '/mnt/user/pmm2' Jun 28 17:29:56 Tower emhttp: shcmd (164): :>/etc/samba/smb-shares.conf Jun 28 17:29:56 Tower emhttp: Restart SMB...
