Well it is not completely dead. One SATA port doesn't work at all. I changed the cable twice and tried 3 discs on that port. Every time I connect a drive to it I can't reach the GUI of unRAID (latest RC 15a). When I disconnect the drive unRAID is responsive just as usual. I try to figure out would I could do:

 

1. Buy another SATA controller and hope nothing else happens to the motherboard.

 

2. Replace the motherboard and keep the CPU (Intel Celeron) and memory.

 

The motherboard needs: Six SATA ports (on board is a must) and I should be able to add two AOC-SASLP-MV8.

 

3. Due to the fact that the CPU/motherboard uses around 54W (idle) I would like to have also an advice for a low power built.

To my knowledge, the only mobo with on-board CPU and two PCIe slots x4 or greater is the SM X7SLA-H (that is still available/seen new)..

The weak spot is the chipset, which is not very energy efficient, AFAIR.

...maybe you could get another used combo?

 

If you want an enery efficient build, replacing board and CPU with a new combo and reusing  the RAM

is the option where you have the most options to choose from, I think.

Hi!

 

8 SATA ports is great. I could add another 2 drives before I need a second AOC-SASLP-MV8 card. I guess the new CPU will be more energy efficient than my Intel Celeron. The price is also interesting.

 

However...I have two other questions:

 

1. Stability: I had no problems at all with the Supermicro board. How is the compatibility with unRAID (the NIC for example). I can't find  the motherboard in the list of supported hardware.

 

2. AOC-SASLP-MV8: Two of them will fit? (I'm not much into that topic.;))

Yes, that CPU will idle very low.

 

The Realtec NIC is fine with the newer V5RC versions..

You'll need that too, in order to use the sata ports 7+8 on that mobo, AFAIR.

If you want to go with an Intel based NIC add a PCI card....if you want a server grade board, go for a SM X9SCM-F, but you'll need ECC RAM for that.

A 1155 board with B75 chipset is quite popular....there is another one, ASRock B75 Pro3-M which has about the same features and is used in quite a few builds already.

That one even supports vt-d (when paired with the right CPU) for a ESXi build.

 

The AOC-SASLP-MV8 needs a PCIe x4 slot....this board comes with a x16 and a x4, so two of them should technically fit....I have no personal experience if they would POST.

The C7Z87 is no longer available in Germany and the X10SL is just too expensive. Around 250-350€ plus a new CPU. I will not pay that.

You asked for recommendations. You didn't say anything about being cheap. SuperMicro boards are not cheap.

The C2SEE has a RealTek NIC too. So hopefully there wouldn't be a problem.

 

Besides that:

 

The Supermicro C2SEE wasn't a cheap motherboard and it still died after a few years. Right now I don't see a reason why I should spend a ton of money for a server grade board. If it works with two of the AOC-SASLP-MV8 cards and the latest RC of unRAID I'm okay with that.

Before I go with a  X10SL I would buy a C2SEA which costs around 135€. That would leave the power consumption as it was.

 

Besides I already questioned why I should buy such an expensive motherboard again? The CS2EE is only three years old so far I remember.

I bought an ASRock B75 Pro3-M and an Intel Celeron G1620. Hopefully it will work like I hope.

...based on the link you found, you're going to be allright.

Issue with your used RAM is one thing that could occur but with any DDR3 model, i'd doubt that.
