[Solved] Only able to add 2 disks? - Basic Edition

Featured Replies

Hi Guys, I'm trying out the software, so far so good.

I'm transferring my files one drive at a time, then adding that empty drive to the array. I am unable to add a third disk to the array in the same way as before though.

It only shows 2 disks to assign to the array, where is disk 3, 4, etc? How can I add? Please see my screenshot of my devices screen.

I have no parity drive yet, I intend to add one last.

parity Not installed

disk1 SAMSUNG_HD204UI_S2H7J9DZC02355

disk2 ST32000542AS_5XW1WW9Z

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

You've added all the drives the free version allows  :)

... note, however, that with v5.0 "final" LimeTech has indicated that the 3 drives supported by "Basic" (the free version) won't have any restrictions ... so at that point if you wanted to add a 3rd data drive (with no parity drive) you should be able to.

v5.0 should be released "real soon now"  8)

Damn that's a bit of a sigh... I suspected as much and headed over to the upgrade page and saw the price.

I'd like to buy 2 copies of it, one for myself and one for my father, but the price is steep, more than I would have expected for something that started as free I think? I suppose a lot of people have put a lot of time into it and they should be rewarded but yeah, just wish I could get a bit of a discount :/

Thanks for answering my question guys.

I used to work in Public Broadcasting and l imagine you might know about about one of their hallmarks, "Fund Drives." A common pitch to get people to pledge was to use the phrase, "....for just pennies each day....."

You may be just starting out using unRAID and hopefully you realize its advantages. Amortize the multi-year use of this product and it really comes down to pennies each day! Such a Deal!

All the best!

nice choice and FYI:... get rid of 4.7 and jump to rc15a

Regarding this i've got a question, i read the wiki on migrating from 4.7 to 5 and it looked substantial to say the least.

I've only added 2 drives out of my 4 to this array because of the limitation of unregistered.

Do you think I should: copy the data off of the drives over the network to a windows box, then install the latest v5 RC, then add teh disks from scratch and start the process over again?

Welcome to the club!

There's a couple of recent threads you might want to review covering the migration.

This first one is probably pretty typical of the move. I did not migrate up from 4.7, so it's not fair for me to comment. They just caught my eye.

The second one offers a way to copy data from a non-unRAID disk to unRAID.

However, since you don't have a parity drive in your current system it might be even easier since you don't have to worry about drive assignments, parity versus data.

But it's good to do your homework and get a good feel for what's supposed to happen. Maybe by re-reading the Wiki a time or two the nuances will make more sense.

Go slow, take time with any PreClears you need to do on new disks. Maybe remove all plug-ins/add-ons you are using with 4.7.

There are a number of "Hero Members" here who have "seen it all;" plus a lot of others who want to help. Best of Luck!

With no parity drive in the system it's really trivial.    Just wipe your flash drive and create a nice new v5 flash drive -- be sure to add your key file to it.

Then just boot to the flash drive, and create an array with your TWO drives that already have data -- but no parity disk.    Start that array and confirm all's okay -- it should be, but just in case it shows anything as "unformatted" do NOT let it format the drives ... post a note here if that happens.

Then Stop the array and add your other drives; assign parity; and you're "off to the races."  :)

Thanks a lot that worked great! Saved me lots of time!

Upon selecting my 2 old disks I was greeted with a "Parity is already valid." checkbox which I ticked and proceeded to start up the array!  :)

I then went to recreate the user shares but I noticed it had automatically created 'broken' shares for every root folder on the 2 disks. Strange. I will try and remove them all and recreate my old ones.

Update: I can't remove the shares because they have to be empty? I tried to rename/move all of the folders somewhere else on the disk over Windows Network but it gives me a file permissions error. Any Ideas? I don't see any permission settings for version 5 web interface for SMB.

Thanks dgaschk that did the trick for accessing the shares. Now just to delete all these useless shares one by one :/ I wonder why they popped up in the changeover.

Is there a way to disable that functioN? Has it always been like that?

I'm not sure if it's good or bad or how I should reorganise my files with that in mind.
