Tower Crashes without warning and only a hard reboot works to bring it back!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I had this server running for over a year without any troubles, did not make any recent changes except for upgrading to rc13 when it was released. It worked perfectly, no issues.

Recently (in the past week or two) after every 2-3 days I have had to hard reboot the server because it just goes offline frequently, when I say offline I mean - none of the shares are accessible, putty(ssh) does not connect, cannot access tower at all, I even tried plugging in a monitor to access the tower but it won't work. I know the server is still running because I can see the fans spinning and the power LED on the case is lit. the only option is to hard reboot, and once back it runs fine for another 3 days and then crashes again. This has happened at least 4 or five time within the last month or so, I have tried to upgrade to rc15A but had the same issue so stepped down to rc13.

I tried to look at the log file to see if there was something I could figure out but it looks like the logs for the crash are not even there on the flash drive. The only saved logs are the ones for after the reboot - it starts with a restart message for that date. Attaching the latest one here (array looks fine but has not been started yet).

Can someone please help figure out what is going on here - I have backup copies of all the previous versions stored locally if I need to try with a different RC version. Let me know if you need more info!

Thanks - Abhi

Rc13 had an issue (for some users) where you would get a hard crash of the system if you tried to stop the array.

Remove all add-ons. Then add them back a few at a time until you determine the problem.

Thank you for your replies!

If I step down to say RC 11 - would that solve the issue. Any idea what that issue the others had for RC 13? Is there a thread started for that here - any links would be great.

Determining the misconfigured or incompatible add-on will solve the issue unless you never intend to upgrade.

Thank You dgaschk!

If I follow the steps in your signature and revert to stock which I am completely fine with doing. What would be the next step be in identifying the incompatible add on. I use Simple Features, Sab, Sickbeard, couchpotato, plex, crashplan etc mainly on a regular basis.

How long would this diagnosis process take? I travel for work (and would be mostly out for the week and back only on weekends) and hence might not be able to access my server on a regular basis. So that is one part of my concern.

First, revert to a stock system and determine if the crashes persist. I'd then add the add-on or add-ons that you find most critical and see if the problem returns. You can also check in the respective threads for the add-ons and see if others are reporting issues.
