Haswell and new Intel NIC I217V

Featured Replies

Hey Guys,

I have the new Sabertooth Z87 mobo running an i5.

I was originally going to get FreeNAS (Which installed fine) but I actually want to test out unRAID before I settle.

I just wanted to check if unRAID would support new Haswell architecture and the new Intel NIC I217V?

Lastly is there an easy way to install SabNZBD, SickBeard, CouchPotato, Headphone on this unRAID server?

I'm fairly sure there's no problem with this, but since you have the system, all you have to do is create a bootable USB flash drive with the free version and confirm that it boots okay.  You don't need to assign any drives (or even have any hard drives installed for that matter) to confirm that it boots okay.

True :)

I have a USB stick ready to go.

Just have to get home now lol

Just so anyone seeing this question will know for sure, post back with the results  :)

Will do

Ye nothing yet.

Just says "Boot Error"

Will continue to play and see if I can get it to boot.

Also will try another usb stick.

Will report back but out now for the day.

FYI this was trying RC16c from late last night.

Will try RC16b too.

Boot error sounds like the bios isn't configured to boot from USB. Have you gone into the bios and set it to boot from the USB stick?

Agree ... I don't think it's booting from the USB flash drive.  Even if UnRAID was to have a problem with the chipset and/or NIC, the USB drive would still boot the underlying Linux OS for sure.

I'm 99% sure it was at least trying to boot from the USB as I did a force boot from bios.

But also think there could be an issue with the USB so will try another one when I'm back home later.

Ok I need some help.

I tried a different USB stick and it boots... But will report my findings later its just running a Memtest.

But... I took out the old USB stick that wouldn't boot, and now since putting unRAID on it, it has Write Protect on.

There is no switch on the USB stick, and I cannot format it or do anything to it.

I have also tried the regedit trick in the StorageDevicePolicies but still cannot format this stick.

I can access it and see all the unRAID files and even open Readme.txt for instance.

How can I wipe this USB key its driving me nuts.

I have also tried the HP USB Disk tool and still keeps saying its write protected.

On a Windows PC, see if Disk Management will let you delete the partition on the flash drive.

i.e. right-click on Computer; select Manage; then click on Disk Management.  Be SURE you're looking at the flash drive; highlight the partition displayed on it; right-click; and select Delete.

If that works okay, you should then be able to create a new partition in the now-unallocated space, which you can then format.

Unfortunately not...

Cant delete just keeps popping up "This media is write protected"

You may have already seen this, but if not, it's worth a try:

Note in particular this post:

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would like to share what worked for me after downloading endless software programs, to try and remove write protection

Try this one out

Just copy and past it into your Browser

http://www.apacer.com/en/support/downloads/Repair_v2.9.1.1.zip

You will have a winrar, winzip ect… pop up

Unzip to a folder on your desktop

Unzip the zip file, and with your usb flash drive plugged in, run the program

In my case the end result was format failed, I closed the program removed the usb flash drive and then plugged it back in

then windows asked me if I would like to format this device, the windows format WORKED YES YES YES BABY

The flash drive is as good as new.

I hope this helps someone."

Thanks mate.

Still doesn't work.

I try to run that Repair tool and it just pops up "Preformat doesn't support this IC"

Tried running compatibility mode to XP same thing.

You may be able to find a similar repair utility on the website for the manufacturer of the USB FLASH drive you have.  If not, you may be able to determine which chip type is in it, and find a utility that way...

At least USB flash drives are inexpensive these days ... so just tossing it isn't all that much of a loss.  I remember when a 256MB flash drive was almost $100  :)

[Of course that was still a LOT more storage than the first hard drive I bought -- a 26MB Seagate that cost $4500 !! ]

I had similar thoughts running through my mind as I typed that last reply...  I am not sure if it is worth the time to worry about the flash drive, with how cheap they are now.  But it can be interesting trying to get things to work again, and often something valuable can be learned from it...

Yesterday I was looking at a cool 32MB USB Flash I had gotten a few years back as a premium from Microsoft.  I thought about how small it is, compared to most of my needs now...  Then realized I could put the full contents from an old Iomega Beta 20 cartridge ont, and still have over 10 MB free!  Things sure do change...  I guess, that is just how computers and technology are.  :-)

I remember thinking how cool it was to have a floppy that could hold almost 10 times the amount of data that I could hold in RAM!  Why would anyone need to use anything more than 64KB of RAM for anything other than a RAM DISK?...

Ye I may try a warranty return.

I bought this flash just for unRAID lol.

Its 16gb and USB 3.

Still not that expensive but would like to use it as its tiny!

And it did cost £20! haha.

That is the Flash in question.

Yup, just gives a Format Fail message.

Wait...

Just tried it again and run as Admin.

Seems to have worked... Let me test it fully.

Is there some Windows Program I can run to test this stick out before I use it as my unRAID server?

If you can format, read, and write to it, it's working fine.    If you format it with the appropriate UNRAID label and copy the UnRAID distribution to it, it should work just fine.

Ok will do.

Just dont really trust it anymore lol

There IS a possibility you have a compatibility issue with that USB 3 flash drive and (I assume) USB 2 ports on your UnRAID box.    The flash SHOULD work fine with v2 ports ... but I've seem many cases where "compatible" means "might work"  8)

Thanks to you and electron286 for your help!

I'll have a play around and get it to work :)
