Noticed my server wasn't connected, started a parity check, then this happened!

Featured Replies

I have no clue what this is, as I normally run my server headless. We moved recently and now I've got a monitor next to the server.

I noticed my share wasn't connected to my Mac mini, so I went to the webUI. The uptime was around 9 hrs so the server somehow restarted in the middle of the night. We did have thunderstorms last night but I see no other signs of losing power around my house. I restarted the array and since it was an unclean shutdown, it started a parity check. A few minutes later I get a message on my Mac that my server disconnected again. I went to turn on the monitor next to the server and this is what is on the screen:

BdNvuYs.jpg

I also noticed that right before I started my array that 4 of my drives were VERY warm, between 47-52 degrees celcius. My parity and other data drive were around 35 degrees celcius.

Anyone have any clue what's going on? Should I un-cleanly power off the server again and see if I can pull the log from the server on reboot? I can't access the server at all via any interface over the network.

EDIT: I also believe I'm running RC15a. Like I said I just moved and haven't had the opportunity to load the latest RC.

1) First RC15a has a bug with unclean power outage you lose data. Keep that in mind.

2) During parity checks, AFP is very slow to respond if at all depending on OSX client version.

See if you can telnet or ssh in and see if its actually running. If so, stop the parity check, and shut it down as gracefully as you can.

Open your case and remove the unraid usb stick. Power on the server and see if you lost any fans, you could have had a massive surge. I had one several years ago and can express how many things fried, the house was not hit but the ground next to it. Whole house surge  protect never even went off. Anyways.

If fans are working properly, update that unRAID usb stick with RC16c to get away from that bug above #1, and you can continue troubleshooting.

Thanks for the response. No luck with telnet or ssh, it wasn't even coming up as a connected device via my router anymore. I shut it down and took out the USB stick, loaded the latest RC on there. The fans seem to be running fine.

According to the monitor I have hooked up, unRAID is loaded. It's sitting on the screen "Welcome to Unraid, Tower login"

I can't access the webUI via my computer though. I checked my router and it does have a DHCP reservation right around the time the server restarted with the newest RC, but it's not accessable via my Mac. I normally connect to the server via SMB, not AFP. Typically I just visit the IP of the server in Safari and that's how I configure it via the webUI. As for connecting to my shares, I just have the share automount via a log-in option when the computer starts. Otherwise if I restart the server I just connect via Finder, "smb://tower"

I hooked up a keyboard to the server and I can type on the command line, but can't get the webUI to be responsive.

execute 'ifconfig' on the commandline

if its has the correct ip, try pinging your router, etc..

Is your array set to auto start?

  • Author

The IP address is still the same, 10.0.1.14. Pinging the server gives me a timeout message. I restarted my router, computer and gigabit switch and I still can't access the server via webUI.

The array is not set to autostart.

Ping from the unRAID server commandline against the router, and then other hosts, do you get a reply back?

  • Author

I pinged both the router, 10.0.1.1 and www.google.com.

All packets were sent and received, no loss for either.

Both my Mac mini and the server are hooked to the Gigabit switch. My router is also hooked up to the switch. No problems accessing the internet on any devices, just can't reach that webUI on the server, from my Mac, iPad, iPhone or Windows laptop.

Sorry but to be sure, did you try reaching the unRAID server by IP from all those clients.

Try pinging from the unRAID server to say the mac mini IP.

Also via a client run a continuous ping against the unRAID server IP, leave that running, reboot the unRAID server, see if at ANY point u get a reply back at any point.

Can your mac mini ping the iphone/ipad

Can your mac mini ping the win laptop, vice versa (provided your firewall is not blocking ICMP)

  • Author

Yep, I tried the IP on everything. I get errors in Firefox, Safari and Chrome all saying they can't connect to the server, 10.0.1.14. Pinging the Mac mini (10.0.1.9) from the server gives me no issues either. I just let it run 200 requests, all sent and received according to the server.

Sent a ping to the server from the Windows laptop, all sent and received as well.

Did the continuous ping from the Mini, restarted the server, ping timed out, server rebooted, ping came back, now I can access the webUI!

Madburg MAGIC PACKET ;)

Yep! Thanks!

Those 4 drives are still really warm, all above 50 degrees celcius. Very hot to the touch. Feels to me that the fan is working in the drive cage but I guess I better check to make sure. Haven't started the array yet to run the parity check.

That is too hot, definitely need to check on that before a parity check, what do u recall the temps were normally before this happened?

Never above 42 during usage, typically around 37 or lower if spun down. These 4 disks are in a Coolermaster 4x3 cage that I've had since I built this server, probably at least 4 years ago.

Right, cool. So you need to find whats going on with your fan(s) RPMs, etc... then.

Good luck.

  • Author

Well I took the 4x3 cage out and thoroughly cleaned the fan, tested it and it was working just fine. After putting everything back together the server won't even boot now. I can't even get a picture on the monitor and the power LED on the front of my case is just blinking.

My main concern is making sure the drives are OK. If it comes down to needing a new MoBo and CPU that's fine, at this point I just want to troubleshoot and see what I can salvage, since it seems like everything is going downhill from here.

Dude unfortunately you're having some hardware issues (cmos, cmos battery, etc..?) it may be a coincidence with the storm you had, or maybe so.

Recheck/seat all your connection, psu to MB, sata/sas cables etc... worth a shot.

Can't tell if bad luck or bad timing :/

I've reseated all of the connectors, no dice. Pulled the CMOS battery, nothing. Fans spin and that's about it, no light from my USB stick and still no picture on the monitor.

Guess its time to find a new board/CPU and figure out what I need to do to transfer my unRAID drives to this new board.

Sorry to hear that..

The Drives/configuration doesn't care what mobo/cpu (as long as it's supported).

You could switch the hard drives/flash drive around to as many different machines/motherboards as you wish and it doesn't care.

So at least 1 less thing to worry about.

If you have another computer, can you try doing a boot from your flash drive just to make sure that is all well

Good to know! Essentially I should just be able to plug in the drives to the new motherboard and be OK with booting? The Flash drive is A-OK, no issues with that.

I created a different thread to ask for some Mobo/CPU options here:

Correct

One caveat:  It's correct you can simply plug the drives in to a new system -- however, one of the key indicators of a failing drive is running hotter than normal.    Unless your fan was not working on the CoolerMaster cage until you cleaned it, you have an issue with drive temps you need to deal with.  [if the fan wasn't working, and now is, that likely explains the temps]

If the fan WAS working, and your drives are still running that hot (consistently over 50), you likely need to replace the failing drive(s).  If you have access to a PC, you could backup the data from your drives using the free Linux Reader [ http://www.diskinternals.com/linux-reader/ ] to read them;  but I'm not aware of any Reiser IFS's for the Mac, so you probably can't do that from your Mac.

In any event, as soon as your replace the system and boot to UnRAID, look at the drive temps ... and if they're still running excessively hot, be sure to backup while you can !!    And a few new 3-4TB drives (WD Reds and Seagate NAS units are good choices) might be worth considering.

Noted! I do have a few older drives in the system so it is possible one was failing. Once I get it back up and running that is my main concern, making sure the data is still in place. Thanks!

It's mostly one component on its way out.

Do you have any motherboard to swap out temporarily with? Or another PSU, it doesn't have to fit your case, just hanging of to the side is fine. This way u could rule out what went south on you. Borrow a friends PSU, bring ur case to their house, I am sure you could think of something. So u know what you truly need to buy.

Replaced the motherboard, CPU and memory. I tested the old memory and it wasn't that, and the PSU was fine, so I assumed it was a motherboard issue. I could've bought a board that worked with my old Sempron, but if I was going to spend the money I might as well have spent a little bit more and got something "newer" to last me even longer, plus now I have an extra two SATA ports. The server seems to be working great now. It's about 55% complete in the first parity-check and I had no issues on the first boot (and it booted a hell of a lot faster!). Drive temps seem normal (hottest I saw the drives that were 52 degrees and above last week were 41 degrees today during part of the parity and in the low 30's most of the time).
