July 21, 201312 yr I recently built up a new unraid system using an ASUS E35M1-M board. I have an existing unraid system (v5.something) running on an old HP server that has two drives plus a parity. Can I simply move the drives over to the new system or do I to add clear drives to the new system first then transfer the files over? Thanks in advance for any help.

July 21, 201312 yr You can simply move the drives over as long as the new system doesn't already have a parity drive. If the new system has a parity drive, you'll need to do a "New Config", and include the old drives in the configuration => otherwise they'll need to be cleared to add them. You could also simply move the drives and the USB flash drive and start with that system and build it up from there.
July 22, 201312 yr I'd move both the hard drives and the USB to the new system. It'll boot and be ready to work as if you hadn't changed a thing.
July 22, 201312 yr Before you do anything, make a complete copy of the drive assignments and the serial number of each drive so that you can align everything as it was set up on the old server. Ver 5 will normally be able to determine what drives are what and set things up so they will work. But it is always best to have a hard copy in case anything goes wrong, goes wrong, goes wrong... You should also consider doing a non-correcting parity check before you start. It should compete without any errors. If there should happen to be an error, address that issue and solve it first!
