Expand or Build a new server

Featured Replies

Hey All,

I have been running my unraid server over a year and it has been running fine so far. I currently have no space on my server and i need to decide if i should build a replica box and have two servers running or expand the server I'm currently running. Here are the components of the server

As you can see, it's a basic server. While expanding or building a box, i would like a more powerful server without spending too much. Any suggestions?  :)

...what's your usecase with the "more powerful" attribute you seek?

When you consider upgrading, just note that your current setup (mobo and CPU) is capable of running ECC RAM...If you need a better CPU go for an FX or Opteron 3300 model.

Thanks. I would like faster transfer speed when moving files between disks

Found this fx cpu + am3 mb

How much performance will i see compared to my current setup? Also, do you recommend building a new box or expanding the existing box

What do you want more power for?  Unless you are using plugins its unlikely you will see much difference between different CPU's.

This usecase will not benefit at all from a faster processor.

Since unRAID does not use striping within the array of disks, the transfer speed is always limited to that of a single disk for each action.

Your current Sempron is well up to the task of moving files around several disks at once.

..also your actual mobo will also support an FX CPU or an Opteron....no need to change, you will not benefit from a more advanced chipset.

I'd invest in ECC RAM to improve stability/data-security.
